Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

Members of the Convention (as of 2014)

The Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity ( Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity , English ) is an international three lists that the UNESCO as part of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage created in 2008. The Representative List includes cultural expressions such as dance, theater, music and oral traditions, as well as customs, festivals and handicrafts. The list was established with the aim of making intangible cultural heritage visible around the world and increasing awareness of the diversity of cultural expressions.

The list comes from the list of masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity . The program Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity which was between 2001 and 2005. The World Heritage Program of UNESCO adds. By 2005, 90 cultural expressions had been proclaimed masterpieces. The culture forms on this list were officially transferred to the Representative List on November 5, 2008.

history

In 1997, UNESCO launched the “Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage” work program. In three proclamations (May 18, 2001, November 7, 2003 and November 25, 2005) UNESCO named 90 particularly valuable intangible cultural forms from all regions of the world as “masterpieces”, which formed the basis for a representative selection of examples of the intangible cultural heritage.

In 2003 an agreement for the preservation of the intangible cultural heritage was concluded, which entered into force on April 20, 2006. So far 178 states (as of May 2018) have ratified the convention. The masterpieces appointed until 2005 were officially added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on November 5, 2008 . There is also a list of the intangible cultural heritage in urgent need of conservation , in which particularly endangered forms of cultural expression are listed, as well as a register of good practice examples .

While Luxembourg recognized the convention back in 2006, Switzerland ratified the convention in 2008, Austria followed suit in 2009 and Germany finally adopted the convention in 2013.

Admission procedure

The representative list has been supplemented annually since 2008 with new entries of cultural expressions. Nominations can be submitted to UNESCO by national governments . The Intergovernmental Committee on the Preservation of the Intangible Cultural Heritage decides on the inclusion of new elements at its annual meeting in winter. The Intergovernmental Committee is composed of 24 members who are elected from representatives of the participating states at the UNESCO General Assembly, which takes place every two years.

As a prerequisite for the nomination of a cultural form of expression on the representative list, it must first have been included in a nationally compiled register. For this reason, each contracting state draws up a National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage for the documentation and inventory of the national intangible cultural heritage. In the four German-speaking countries that have signed the convention, it is the nationwide directory of intangible cultural heritage in Germany, the list of intangible cultural heritage in Austria , the list of living traditions in Switzerland and the register of intangible cultural heritage in Luxembourg .

Distribution of the list elements by country (cross-border elements are listed in all participating countries), as of 2018

Entries in the representative list

The Representative List includes 463 cultural expressions from 124 countries. (As of December 2019)

(The year indicates the year of inclusion. If two years are mentioned, the first number indicates the year of inclusion in the list of masterpieces, the second number refers to the adoption of the cultural expression in the representative list of the UNESCO Convention for the Preservation of intangible cultural heritage.)
