Yağlı güreş competition in Istanbul

Oil wrestling ( Turkish Yağlı güreş ) is a sport that is considered the national sport of Turkey . It is also widespread in Bulgaria , especially in the south-east of the country.

Two wrestlers always compete against each other, supervised by a referee. The fighting takes place outdoors on the lawn. The typical combat clothing are special lederhosen ( kispet ). In addition, the fighters rub olive oil from head to toe , which makes it very difficult to use levers and handles.

There are two possibilities that lead to victory: Either you manage to press both shoulders of the opponent on the ground (shoulder victory), or you pick up the opponent and take three steps.

Yağlı Güreş is considered to be one of the most difficult and complicated ring sports. When Turkish Kırkpınar wrestlers competed for Turkey at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , they won 7 of the 16 gold medals in the field of wrestling, bringing Turkey to sixth place in the medal table (these were the most successful Olympic Games for Turkey). The Turkish and the Mongolian wrestling match have a lot in common.

Kırkpınar tournament

According to tradition, the first Kırkpınar tournament was held in Rumelia / Ottoman Empire in 1361 . The fights in their current form have taken place every June since 1925 on the Sarayiçi Peninsula ( Kırkpınar ) on the outskirts of Edirne city . The Kırkpınar Festival has been inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2010 .

In 1996 the first international Kırkpınar championship, the Amsterdam Kirkpinar, was held in the Netherlands, in 2002 the first Dutch championship in The Hague and in 2004 the first German championship in Frankfurt am Main .
