Ahmet Muhtar

Ahmet Muhtar Merter (born July 1, 1891 in Istanbul ; † October 2, 1959 there ) was a Turkish resistance fighter during the Turkish liberation war . The Merter district in Istanbul is named after him. Merter was the Ağa (patron) of the Turkish national sport of oil wrestling ( Yağlı güreş ) in 1957, 1958 and 1959 . Muhtar Merter's picture is now hanging in the Anıtkabir museum wing . In his honor a primary and secondary school was named in Istanbul.

Trivia

Ahmet Muhtar Merter was Tevfik Sağlam Pasha's brother-in-law . The psychiatrist Nesip Mustafa Merter is his grandson and the Turkish actress Selma Merter is his great-granddaughter.
