Tevfik Sağlam

Tevfik Sağlam Pascha (actually Ali Tevfik Salim , born May 27, 1882 in Istanbul ; † July 11, 1963 there ) was a philanthropic Turkish general ("Pasha") and the first president of the Istanbul Medical Association .

Life

In 1891 he entered a military school of the Ottoman Empire and finished there in 1903 with the rank of captain, his degree in medicine. In 1915 he became second senior physician in the 2nd division, and in the same year he was promoted to senior physician in the 3rd division. Then in 1917 came his promotion to colonel . During the First World War , typhus and cholera were widespread in the Ottoman army and population. Sağlam's efforts to produce vaccines under the simplest conditions together with Tevfik İsmail Gökçe not only found recognition in international science, but also helped to significantly reduce the number of deaths. Later in 1959, his memories of his time in the 3rd Division were to be published as a book. After the war defeat in 1918 he taught at the medical-military faculty. In 1919 in Samsun he joined the men around Ataturk upon invitation . In 1921 he worked in Ankara in the Health Directorate of the Ministry of Defense . In 1923 he accepted the post of medical director of the Internal Disease Hospital in Izmir .

In the same year he became professor and chief physician at Gülhane University Hospital. In 1927 he was called up again by the Ministry of Defense and promoted to general and medical director. Tevfik Sağlam was then elected the first president of the Istanbul Medical Association in 1929. Until 1933 he was also a member of the Istanbul state parliament. After the university reform in 1933, he became dean of the University of Istanbul. In 1934 he was dismissed after a disagreement with the then Minister of Health. In 1936 he was elected to the Advisory Board of the Ministry of Health. In 1939 he became head of the 3rd Hospital for Internal Diseases and got his professorship back. From 1943 to 1946 he was director of the University of Istanbul. He carried out the tasks of his professorship until his retirement on May 27, 1952. His work on liver biopsy and liver enzymes also attracted attention in medicine outside of Turkey. He is also considered to be the architects of the university independence legislation. With the financial help of his wife Naile Sağlam , he founded a tuberculosis institute named after her. He also founded the association to combat tuberculosis. After his death he bequeathed the fortune inherited from his wife Naile Sağlam (née Merter) to the Association for the Fight against Tuberculosis . The estate included extensive estates and the Haznedar Tuğla brick factory in Istanbul. Merter .

There is a primary school named after him in Beyoğlu , Istanbul.

Tevfik Sağlam was the brother-in-law of Ahmet Muhtar Merter .
