Hanamaki is north of Sendai and south of Morioka .
The Kitakami flows through the city from north to south.

The district of Ōhasama is home to the mask dance Hayachine Kagura ( 早 池 峰 神 楽 ) which was included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009 .
