The Kitakami ( Japanese 北上 川 , Kitakami-gawa , German "northern, upper river") is a river on the Japanese main island of Honshū .

It is 249 km long and has a catchment area of ​​10,150 km², which extends over the prefectures of Iwate and Miyagi . The catchment area is the largest in the Tohoku region and the fourth largest in the country. During the Edo period it was mainly used to transport rice to the capital Edo . As a flood protection measure, the river was divided into two tributaries at the level of the city of Tome . While the Kyūkitakami flows into Sendai Bay in the center of Ishinomaki , the Shinkitakami flows into Oppa Bay .
