Ōshū ( Japanese 奥 州市 , -shi ) is a city in Iwate Prefecture on Honshū , the main island of Japan . The name is short for the province of Mutsu .
history
The city of Ōshū was formed on February 20, 2006 from the cities of Mizusawa ( 水 沢 市 , -shi ) and Esashi ( 江 刺 市 , -shi ), as well as the communities of Maesawa ( 前 沢 町 , -chō ) and Isawa ( 胆 沢 町 , -chō ) and the village of Koromogawa ( 衣 川村 , -mura ) in Isawa County.

The Kitakami flows through the city from north to south.
