geography

Geographical location

Breitenwang is located in the Reutte valley basin and is closely linked to this municipality in terms of infrastructure. The clustered village consists of the districts of Breitenwang, Lähn, Mühl, Neumühl and Plansee. A part of the Plansee belongs to the municipality in which the Archbach rises from the Plansee.

Neighboring communities

Breitenwang has only two neighboring communities: Heiterwang in the south and Reutte in the west, north and east.

history

Breitenwang was first mentioned as "Breitinwanc" or "Breitenwanch" in 1094, when Duke Welf IV and his wife Judith transferred property there to the Welf monastery Altdorf-Weingarten . Originally larger and more important than Reutte, this changed when the main street was straightened out. From then on the place lost its importance.

Emperor Lothar III. died in Breitenwang on December 4, 1137 on his return journey from Italy (second train to Rome).

Culture and sights

  • Catholic parish church Breitenwang Hll. Peter and Paul: The church was built around 1650. The ceiling fresco in the choir with the depiction of the "handing over of the keys to Peter" from 1755 is by Johann Jakob Zeiller . In the sacristy there are four rococo silver reliquary busts depicting the apostles Peter and Paul and the two plague patrons Sebastian and Rochus. In the Resurrection Chapel you can see a dance of death in stucco medallions (approx. 1725).
  • The chapel of the dead Ad Beatam Virginem Mariam Dolorosam , which was added to the tower of the parish church of St. Petrus and Paulus in 1732, received a dance of death as part of the furnishings , which the sculptor and plasterer Thomas Seitz from Füssen created between 1724 and 1728. Medallions adorned with tendrils show how death begins the last dance with ten people. The doomed can be recognized by their insignia and attributes; no texts or names are used. On the left wall: Pope, Moses, wife, landlord, beggar; on the right wall: emperor, lawyer, soldier, cooper, farmer. The furnishings also include: stucco reliefs in the spandrels of the choir dome and other reliefs in the valley between the wall and the base of the dome; Ceiling painting by the Reutten painter Paul Zeiller; Sculptures by the Füssen sculptor Anton Sturm.

Economy and Infrastructure

Industrial history begins on June 21, 1921 with the founding of the Plansee metal works in the eastern district of Mühl, which is now one of the world's leading powder metallurgy companies (with 2000 of a total of 5000 employees in Breitenwang). This helps the community to have a positive commuter balance. There is also a power station for the electricity company in Breitenwang.
