Ehrwald is a municipality with 2610 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Reutte district in Tyrol ( Austria ). The community is located in the judicial district of Reutte .

Location and districts

Alpenglow on the Zugspitze from Ehrwald (Tyrol)

Ehrwald lies at the foot of the Wetterstein Mountains with the 2962  m high Zugspitze , at the basin of the Lermooser Moos , a former swampy landscape. The Loisach flows past the place. The name is possibly derived from the Old High German eriro or erro wald , which means "beginning of the forest". According to another view, the name means "old forest" or "ore forest", which cannot be ruled out in view of the nearby ore deposits.

In addition to the main town Obermoos with the valley station of the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn and Ehrwald-Schanz at the former customs station, the districts are Oberdorf, Unterdorf, Schmiede and Weidach.

Ehrwald is adjacent to Biberwier , Garmisch-Partenkirchen (D), Grainau (D), Lermoos and Mieming .

history

Ehrwald was first mentioned in a document in 1274. The settlement did not take place from the Allgäu, as in the rest of Ausserfern , but from Imst . Mining, which continued until the beginning of the 20th century, certainly provided an incentive for this. The place was a bit off the main traffic route over the Fernpass , but had an important source of income with the production of barrel staves for the Saline Hall . Ehrwald was discovered by tourists as early as the beginning of the 20th century and, along with Lermoos, grew into an important two-season tourist community in the Zugspitz region.

The second cable car construction in Austria, the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn , which opened in 1926 and was rebuilt in 1991 (reconstruction of the valley station in 2003 after a fire) and leads to the summit, played an important role in this .

  • Every year on the weekend around St. John's Day ( summer solstice , June 21), the imposing mountain scenery around the Ehrwald-Lermoos-Biberwier valley basin becomes a spectacular experience of its kind as part of the traditional solstice fires by laying out large figures from thousands of incendiary devices is unique. The figures range from Christian symbolism, motifs from the world of plants and animals to the representation of complex images. The entire dynamic is further increased by laying out chains of fire along the mountain ridges. Since 2010 is part Bergfeuer Ehrwald for Intangible World Heritage , as declared by UNESCO, on the Austria List (National Treasure) .

Ski and hiking areas

Ehrwald has - in addition to the Zugspitze - two other skiing and hiking areas, the Wetterstein lifts from the center and the Ehrwalder Alm ski area ( 1502  m ). The latter can be reached via the Ehrwalder-Almbahn and is the starting point for various ski lifts. There are around 27.5 kilometers of ski slopes at an altitude between 1,100 and 1,900 meters; including a black slope ("Issentalkopf"). For hikers, the "Ehrwalder Alm" is the starting point for various different hikes, for example. B. to the Zugspitze (via the "Gatterl") or to the Seebensee and the Coburger Hütte .
