history
The area around Imst has been populated since the Bronze Age. In 763 Imst was first mentioned in a document as "in oppido Humiste" - part of the founding equipment of the St. Peter monastery church built in Scharnitz by the diocese of Freising . The name is said to go back to an early form of the Latin humidus (moist), which was connected with the word formation morphem -iste . The name can be translated as Nassfeld, damp ground . The genesis of the toponym : 1120 as "Uemeste", 1143 as "Umiste", 1278 as "Umeste", 1296 as "Ümst". In the late Middle Ages, the sound Imst finally prevailed.
In 1266 Meinhard II of Tyrol acquired the area from Bavarian ownership and in 1282 granted Imst market rights. In 1822 there was a great fire disaster. In 1898 Imst was granted city rights.
Confronted with the misery of war orphans and homeless children after the Second World War , Hermann Gmeiner founded the SOS Children's Village Association in 1949 and began building an SOS Children's Village together with friends. On April 15, 1951, after two years of construction, the world's first SOS Children's Village was opened in Imst.

- The Catholic parish church in Imst was built from 1462 to 1493 as a late Gothic hall church by the Imst Bauhütte . The interior was redesigned in Baroque style in 1780 and re- vaulted after a fire in 1822 and reconstructed in Gothic style around 1908.

The cooperation with the two other large carnival varieties in the Oberland, Telfs and Nassereith , was intensified. In addition to the “big carnival”, the Buabefasnacht , the small edition of the Schemenlaufens, takes place every three to five years . Around 340 enthusiastic “boys” from 6 to 16 years of age attended the Buabefasnacht 2014.

economy
The industrial history was particularly shaped by mining in the 15th and 16th centuries, and in the 18th and 19th centuries by the textile industry .
