Matthias Konrath

Matthias Konrath (born March 9, 1843 in Imst ; † December 7, 1925 in Greifswald ) was an Austro-German Anglicist .

Life

Matthias Konrath, son of a forest farmer, studied English , German and Classical Philology at the University of Innsbruck from the winter semester 1862/63 and became a member of the Corps Rhaetia at the beginning of his studies . In the summer semester of 1865 he moved to the University of Vienna to continue his studies . From 1874 to 1882 he worked in Vienna as a secondary school teacher for German and English. During this period he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD.

In 1882 he succeeded Hermann Varnhagen as associate professor for English at the University of Greifswald . Here he became head of the English department of the seminar for modern philology established in the same year. In 1903 he was appointed full professor, initially with a personal full professorship, then from 1908 as a regular full professor for English philology. In 1910/11 he was dean. In 1911 an independent English seminar was formed, the first director of which was Konrath. In 1914 he retired, but temporarily represented his successor Heinrich Spies during the First World War .

His academic work focused on the historical grammar of English and research into the Kentish dialect of Middle English.
