Käthe Kluth

Käthe Kluth , née Ostwald , (* December 24, 1899 in Stralsund ; † May 31, 1985 in Greifswald ) was a German philologist and English studies specialist . She was the first female professor at the University of Greifswald .

Life

Käthe Kluth, daughter of an administrative officer, graduated from high school in Stralsund in 1920. From 1921 to 1926 she studied English, German and history at the universities of Greifswald and Rostock . In 1926 she passed the specialist examination for teaching at secondary schools and did a legal clerkship in Stettin and Lauenburg i. Pom. Her doctorate took place in Greifswald in 1927. Between 1928 and 1945 she worked most recently as a school teacher at the high school in Pasewalk . Until 1939 she regularly undertook language studies in Great Britain during the holidays .

In 1945 she first moved to Grimmen . From 1946 she was a lecturer at the University of Greifswald, where she played a key role in the reconstruction of the English Institute after the Second World War. In 1952 she became the first female professor at the university. From 1952 to 1952 and from 1954 to 1956 she was acting director, from 1956 director of the English Institute. In 1959 she was given a full professorship. In 1962 she retired. Käthe Kluth was a member of the scientific advisory board at the State Secretariat for universities and technical colleges in the GDR .

Käthe Kluth Scholarship

Since 2007, the University of Greifswald has sponsored female junior researchers who have already completed their habilitation or who can be expected to do so based on their performance, with the scholarship named after Käthe Kluth . The aim is to increase the proportion of women in professorships.
