Norbert Heltschl
Norbert Heltschl (born November 26, 1919 in Imst ; † December 5, 2017 ) was an Austrian architect .
Life
The son of an Imster woman and a British officer developed an interest in drawing and painting as a schoolboy. At the age of 16 he began an apprenticeship as a bricklayer and attended the state trade school in Innsbruck from 1937 to 1941 , from which he graduated with the Matura. He then studied architecture at the Technical University of Stuttgart , but was drafted into the Air Force that same year. In 1943 he was seriously injured while working as a flight information operator near Stalingrad . During the war he continued his studies in Stuttgart and graduated in 1945 from Paul Schmitthenner . Since his diploma could not be nostrified in Austria , he had to repeat the diploma examination at the Graz University of Technology . He then worked from 1945 to 1947 as Friedrich Zotter's assistant at the Graz University of Technology and attended Hubert Hoffmann's master class .
In 1947 he married the architecture student Maria Melcher, whom he had met in Graz. From 1947 he was employed as a teacher at the Federal Trade School in Innsbruck. In 1952 he received his civil engineering license and opened his own office in Innsbruck, where his wife worked as an office manager and was responsible for the interior fittings of his projects. In 1980 he retired as an HTL teacher, but continued to work as an architect until 1993.
For many years, Norbert Heltschl was President of the Central Association of Architects in Tyrol and a board member of the Chamber of Engineers. He advocated the consistent application of the regulations for architecture competitions and tenders early on and thus contributed to the development of the architectural scene in Tyrol.
architecture
Norbert Heltschl did not follow the homeland security architecture of his teacher Paul Schmitthenner, one of the main representatives of the Stuttgart school , but oriented himself early on to the international trends of classical modernism . His role models included Frank Lloyd Wright , Richard Neutra and, in particular, Le Corbusier . He was one of the first in Tyrol to use fair-faced concrete .
Heltschl's works include single and multi-family houses, leisure buildings, industrial plants, school buildings and churches. He often received his commissions by winning architectural competitions. One of his most important works is the Tivoli outdoor pool in Innsbruck, which he planned as the result of an Austria-wide competition in 1958. With the buildings made of exposed concrete and the diving tower that looks like a sculpture, the swimming pool (now partially changed) is a testament to the connection of Tyrol to the international architecture of the post-war period and is a listed building . The visual arts were important to Heltschl and often an integral part of his buildings, and he often worked with the painter August Stimpfl in particular .
As a teacher, he was considered unconventional and shaped his students, including Heinz Tesar , Hanno Schlögl and Margarethe Heubacher-Sentobe .
