Ifakara , capital of the Kilombero District in Tanzania , is located in the valley of the Kilombero River, around 400 kilometers southwest of Dar es Salaam .

The place has around 46,000 inhabitants, including suburbs around 80,000. Ifakara is the administrative center of the Kilombero district and an important trading center for the Kilombero valley. In addition, there is a large reference hospital (St. Francis Referral Hospital), a training center for medical staff and various non-governmental organizations . The St. Francis Referral Hospital has been a Faculty of Medicine (St. Francis University College of Health and Allied Sciences, SFUCHAS) since 2010. The parent university is St. Augustine University in Mwanza .

With a well-known health research center located here (Ifakara Health Institute - until June 30, 2008 Ifakara Health Research and Development Center), Ifakara has been a center for internationally recognized research in the field of malaria and other tropical diseases for decades . The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC supports the health and research institute Ifakara Health Institute IHI. It was founded in the 1940s as a field laboratory for the Swiss Tropical Institute and handed over to the Tanzanian state in 1991. The Ifakara Health Institute is one of the winners of the Prince of Asturias Prize 2008 in the field of international cooperation.

Ifakara has a train station on the TAZARA railway line that connects Dar es Salaam with Zambia . Passenger trains run three times a week in each direction.

Since January 14, 2012 Ifakara has been the bishopric of the newly established Roman Catholic diocese "Ifakara". The first bishop is Salutaris Melchior Libena .
