The Plansee Group (named after the Plansee ; company name: Plansee Holding AG) is an Austrian company based in Reutte . The group of companies deals with the powder-metallurgical production of materials ( molybdenum and tungsten ) and their further processing into tools and molded parts. The Plansee Group is a private company and is considered a world market leader.

history

Paul Schwarzkopf in Reutte (late 1950s)

Paul Schwarzkopf (born April 13, 1886 ), industrialist and pioneer in the field of powder metallurgy, founded Metallwerk Plansee GmbH in 1921. At the time, Schwarzkopf looked for a suitable production site near a hydropower station in a newspaper advertisement and ultimately decided on Reutte. From 1929 to 1931, the production of hard metals and hard materials began using new and specially developed processes .

In 1938, after the annexation of Austria to the German Reich , Schwarzkopf was expropriated because he was considered a Jew under the Nuremberg Laws , and fled to the USA from the National Socialists . Therefore, between 1938 and 1952, the company was part of Deutsche Edelstahlwerke AG .

Schwarzkopf founded the American Electro Metal Corporation in 1939, which is now run under the name Plansee USA LLC. Schwarzkopf continued his research in the field of powder metallurgy in exile and returned to Europe in 1947.

Plansee metal works (1922)

In 1952, Paul Schwarzkopf became the sole owner of Metallwerk Plansee GmbH again and expanded the company into a globally active company.

In 1970 Paul Schwarzkopf died in his adopted home Reutte. The company is subsequently run by family members and managers outside the family.

At the beginning of the 1980s, the Plansee Group consisted of 14 companies worldwide. In 1987 the activities of Plansee Hochleistungswerkstoffe and Plansee Hartmetall-Werkzeuge (Plansee Tizit) were separated.

Plansee Group production site in Reutte (2018)

In 1996 there was a fire in the Plansee Tizit sintering plant in Reutte. Hilde Schwarzkopf , who had represented family interests on the supervisory board since 1978 and was referred to as the grande dame of Tyrolean industry , appeared shortly afterwards in front of the workforce and, despite the amount of damage, advocated the rebuilding of the site soon.

In 2002 the Plansee Group merged its Plansee hard metal tool division with the Luxembourg company Cerametal to form the new company Ceratizit. The Plansee Group has a 50 percent stake in Ceratizit. As early as 1948 there was a joint venture between Cerametal and Plansee.

In 2008 the Plansee Group took over the GTP division from Osram Sylvania . The Plansee Group has been gradually investing in the Chilean molybdenum and rhenium manufacturer Molymet since 2011.

The Plansee Group is now divided into three corporate divisions and a holding: Plansee High Performance Materials, Ceratizit Hard Materials & Tools and Global Tungsten & Powders, as well as Molymet.

The company operates 49 production sites on three continents and sales offices and agencies in 50 countries.

Group structure

Plansee Holding AG maintains the following subsidiaries and holdings:

Plansee high-performance materials

Plansee Hochleistungswerkstoffe develops and produces semi-finished products and components made of molybdenum , tungsten and tungsten-based heavy metal alloys . These metals are required in applications such as the coating industry, power transmission, lighting industry, high-temperature furnace construction, semiconductor manufacturing, electronics industry and medical technology. These metals are used when conventional metals reach their physical limits.

In September 2017, Plansee founded the Matmatch material search platform. Materials experts and buyers around the world can use the platform to find out more about the currently more than 80,000 known materials and to contact possible suppliers.

Ceratizit hard materials & tools

Ceratizit SA is a public limited company based in Mamer, Luxembourg, in which Plansee Holding AG has a 50% stake.

Ceratizit develops and produces tools for machining as well as wear parts for industrial production made of carbide and other hard materials. After a series of smaller acquisitions of solid carbide tool manufacturers, Ceratizit took over the Komet Group , a manufacturer of precision tools, in October 2017 .

Global Tungsten & Powders

Global Tungsten & Powders (GTP), headquartered in the USA, is one of the leading manufacturers of tungsten powder. Tungsten ore concentrates are processed into ammonium paratungstate (APW) and further into tungsten metal powder, tungsten carbide and ready-to-press powders. GTP has a subsidiary in Bruntál (Czech Republic) and was incorporated into the Plansee Group on August 1, 2008 after approval by the antitrust authorities as the fourth division at that time.

On June 12, 2015, GTP took over Tikomet in Finland, which specializes in the recycling of hard metal scrap .

The PMG sintered molded parts division was sold in 2011. Holding functions of the Plansee Group are bundled in the Plansee Group Service GmbH, based in Breitenwang / Reutte.

Molymet

The Plansee Group has a 20 percent stake in the listed Molibdenos y Metalas SA (Molymet for short) based in Santiago de Chile . Molymet specializes in the processing of molybdenum ore concentrates and rhenium .

Products

The companies in the Plansee Group cover the entire powder metallurgy process chain. Pure metal powder is produced from the mined ore. This is further processed by powder metallurgy by pressing, sintering and forming into semi-finished products and tool blanks and then mechanically processed. Depending on the requirements, the Plansee Group supplies metal powder, semi-finished products or ready-to-install components made from refractory and hard metals. Due to scarce and expensive resources, the first step - the procurement of raw materials through cooperation with mines or recycling - is becoming increasingly important.

Mainly the materials molybdenum and tungsten are processed in the Plansee Group , but also other refractory metals such as tantalum , niobium and chromium as well as their alloys and composite materials.

The sales markets include entertainment electronics, the automotive industry, mechanical engineering, the construction industry, energy technology, medical technology, the semiconductor industry and aerospace.

social commitment

Paul Schwarzkopf Foundation

The foundation named after the company founder Paul Schwarzkopf, based in Reutte, pursues the goal of promoting the training and further education of young people from economically weak families.

Plansee concerts

Impression (Plansee Concerts)

The Plansee Concerts were initiated by Hilde and Walter Schwarzkopf and have been taking place regularly since 1975. They are organized and financed by the Plansee Group. A concert season includes five predominantly classical concerts. The concert hall, built in 1978 on the premises of the Plansee Group in Reutte, functions as a daytime canteen for employees.

Plansee seminar

The Plansee Seminar is an international specialist congress on the development and production of refractory metals and hard materials . Experts from research, science and industry exchange ideas about applications, materials, manufacturing technologies as well as testing and characterization methods. The Plansee seminar takes place every four years and is organized by the Plansee Group in Reutte . The first Plansee seminar took place in Reutte in 1952.
