- 63 BC BC : Cicero holds the last of his speeches against Catiline . Cato's expression of opinion then leads to the imposition of the death penalty for the conspirators of the attempted coup in the Roman Empire .
- 1082 : Raimund Berengar II , one of the two Counts of Barcelona , is killed in a hunt. Popular opinion considers his twin brother Berengar Raimund II to be the instigator because he seeks power in Catalonia .
- 1212 : Friedrich II of Staufer is confirmed as Roman-German king in a by-election in Frankfurt am Main .
- 1408 : After the conquest of Perejaslavl and Nizhny Novgorod, the emir Edigü appears with his Golden Horde before Moscow . However, he subsequently withdrew after paying a ransom of 3,000 rubles .
- 1492 : Christopher Columbus discovered the Caribbean island of Hispaniola on his first voyage .

- 2017 : The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decides to suspend Russia from the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang - for the first time an entire nation is excluded from the Olympic Games.
