Gary Allan (* 5. December 1967 in La Mirada , California as Gary Allan Herzberg ) is an American country singer .

Life

Beginnings

Gary Allan grew up on a California ranch. He has been passionate about surfing and country music since early childhood. Influenced by the stars of the Bakersfield scene, especially Buck Owens and Merle Haggard , he began to make music himself. As a teenager, he accompanied his father, who performed in bars and clubs in the area. In his early twenties he founded his own band. It then took almost seven years before a demo tape found its way to Decca Records . In 1996 a record deal was signed.

Career

In 1996, the Mark Wright produced album Used Heart for Sale was released. It moved up to the top 20 of the album charts. The decoupled singles were less successful, as Allan's traditional music was rarely played by the radio stations. His second album, It Would Be You , was released in 1998. The single of the same name was able to place in the top 10. In early 1999, Decca retired from the music business. Gary Allen, the "surfing cowboy", was taken over by the MCA label together with his producer Mark Wright.

The 1999 recorded album Smoke Rings in the Dark finally brought sales success. The album itself went platinum, and two successful singles were released. In 2001 the single Man to Man, taken from the album Alright Guy , reached number 1 on the country charts.
