La Mirada is a city in the US state California , United States , with 49,300 inhabitants (2004).

history

The story of La Mirada begins in 1888 when Andrew McNally and Edwin Neff bought 8.9 km² of land south of Los Angeles for $ 200,000 to plant olive trees . Olive oil became so popular that a workers' settlement was formed that was also connected to the railway network.

The name of the place was the La Mirada Land Company founded by McNally and Neff in 1896 . In 1946 the village, located in the middle of olive plantations, had 213 inhabitants.

In 1953 the land on which the settlement was located was sold to the State of California for $ 5.2 million. When he received city rights on March 23, 1960 under the name Mirada Hills , the population had risen to over 8,000. On November 8, 1960, the name was changed to La Mirada due to a referendum ; the name change took place on December 15, 1960.

La Mirada is the headquarters of the private Christian Biola University , which from 1908 by evangelicals established the Bible Institute of Los Angeles has emerged. In addition to a theological faculty, it now has training areas in business administration, psychology, pedagogy and intercultural studies. In 2015 the university had 475 academic staff, 4011 students and 1308 postgraduate students.
