history
The university was founded in 1908 as the Bible Institute of Los Angeles by Lyman Stewart , co-owner of the Union Oil Company of California , and Pastor Thomas C. Horton . In the first year, 540 seminars were held. In 1912 the institute had grown so that the clergyman Reuben A. Torrey, known in America , could be appointed as a teacher. In 1913 the foundation stone of the institute building was laid. The institute became known through the publication of The Fundamentals 1910–1915. Torrey was able to win well-known conservative American theologians such as Benjamin B. Warfield to present the basic Christian beliefs in book form. The virgin birth of Jesus, the incarnation of God in Jesus Christ , the divinity of Christ and other central doctrines were presented in five volumes in order to defend them against criticism, relativization and questioning of the liberal theologians who were convinced of the historical-critical method.
Under the direction of Louis T. Talbot , who was president 1932–1935 and 1938–1952, the school expanded the previous two-year course into a four-year program in theology, Christian education and church music. A new annual program in missionary medicine was offered. In 1952 the Talbot Theological Seminary was founded. Under Samuel H. Sutherland , who became president in 1952, property was purchased in La Mirada in 1959. In the same year the institute was approved as a Biola University. In the years that followed, the curricula were expanded into the arts, science, and professional education without losing their strong base in biblical studies. In 1977, under the sixth President, J. Richard Chase , the Rosemead Graduate School of Professional Psychology was affiliated.
In 1981 the Biola University became the Biola University. It consisted of the School of Arts and Sciences, Rosemead School of Psychology, and Talbot School of Theology . In 1982 Clyde Koch became the seventh president. In 1983 the School of Intercultural Studies was founded, specializing in world missions; it was renamed the Cook School of Intercultural Studies in 2009 . The School of Business was added in 1993 and became the Crowell School of Business in 2007 . In 2007, the eighth president, Barry H. Corey, was elected.
In 2015, Biola University has a theological faculty and training areas in business administration , psychology , pedagogy and intercultural studies. Today it offers more than 150 academic programs at the bachelor, master and doctoral level. The university had 475 academic staff, 4,011 students and 1,308 postgraduate students.
