Arthur Tappan Pierson
Arthur Tappan Pierson (born March 6, 1837 in New York City ; † June 3, 1911 ibid) was an American Presbyterian pastor, missionary and writer who wrote over 13,000 sermons, wrote over fifty books and gave Bible lectures as part of a "transatlantic ministry of preaching" held that made him famous in Scotland, England and Korea.
He was an advisor to the Study Bible of Cyrus I Scofield ( Scofield Bible , 1909) and a friend of Dwight Lyman Moody , George Mueller (whose biography George Mueller of Bristol he wrote), Adoniram Judson Gordon and Charles Haddon Spurgeon . Throughout his career, Pierson held several pulpit positions around the world and was involved in poor relief .
He was also a pioneer of faith missions and determined to evangelize the world in his generation . Prior to 1870, there were only about 2,000 full-time missionaries from the United States, about ten percent of whom were working among the Indians. A large movement of foreign missions began in the 1880s and accelerated into the 20th century, in part due to the work of Pierson. He served as the " elder statesman " of the missionary movement and was the leading evangelical advocate of missions abroad in the late 19th century . After retiring, he visited Korea in 1910. His visit triggered the founding of the Pierson Memorial Union Bible Institute (now Pyeongtaek University) in 1912 .
