Pyeongtaek ( kor. 평택 ) is a city in the South Korean province of Gyeonggi-do .

The port city is located in the Sudogwon metropolitan area in the south of the Gyeonggi-do province and has 434,305 inhabitants. The port is one of the four largest trading ports in South Korea and is located on the Yellow Sea . The area of the city corresponds to 453.31 km² about 2/3 of the area of Seoul. The Gyeongbu Expressway runs through the city, heading north to Seoul and south to Busan .

On January 1, 1986, Pyeongtaek received city ( -si ) status . Mayor is Kim Sun-ki ( 김선기 ).

The United States Forces Korea's Camp Humphreys base is located in Yongin and the Osan Air Base base is also in Pyeongtaek and not in the neighboring city of Osan . The expansion of Camp Humphreys as the main base for the US military in South Korea sparked major protests in 2006 as villagers had to be relocated. Ultimately, the residents of Daechuri and Doduri received compensation and the military facility was expanded.

The South Korean Navy has stationed its second fleet in Pyeongtaek.

The area is famous for Pyeongtaek Nongak ( 평택 농악 ), a traditional instrumental music used by farm workers .
