Gwangju is a city in the eastern part of Gyeonggi-do Province in South Korea with 236,688 inhabitants (as of July 2009). It is located around 25 km southeast of the Korean capital Seoul . In July 2010, it was to be merged with the neighboring cities of Seongnam and Hanam to form a new city of millions called Seonggwangha . Until today nothing happened.

Name and symbols

The name of the city is made up of the syllables 廣 (넓을 광, far) and 州 (고을 주, district). The symbol tree, flower and bird of the city are the ginkgo tree, the forsythia and the swallow .

The city is divided into 3 eup , 4 myeon and 3 administrative dong , which together comprise 13 legal dong .
