Seongnam is a city in Gyeonggi-do Province in South Korea . With a close proximity to the capital Seoul , Seongnam is one of the most important satellite cities in the metropolitan area of Sudogwon .
Seongnam is a residential city with similar populations to other satellite cities e.g. B. Goyang and Gwacheon . The most densely populated district is the planned city of Bundang-gu , which is home to a large number of apartment complexes with many high-rise buildings. Bundang-gu is the heart of Seongnam and is connected to the rest of the city by the Bundang-Naegok and Bundang-Suseo city highways , which lead to Gangnam in Seoul.
history
Until the 1980s, Seongnam was a medium-sized city with a population below 500,000. Also in terms of the importance of its function as a satellite city, Seongnam was of secondary importance compared to other cities such as Incheon , Gwacheon , Suwon and Anyang .
When the Bundang district was rebuilt in the early 1990s, the city took on a completely different character. The number of inhabitants doubled, the infrastructure was renewed and, above all, the previously middle-class population shifted to the upper class.
In recent years there have been efforts to make Seongnam a Gwangyeoksi ( 광역시 , big city ). This would administratively separate it from Gyeonggi-do and put it on an equal footing with a province. These efforts are justified by the growing population, which has now exceeded that of the city of Ulsan , and the fact that Seongnam is slowly developing into an independent city with local industry. The major electronics company Kyung-Dong has its headquarters here.
In July 2010, the city was to be merged with the neighboring cities of Gwangju and Hanam to form a new megacity called Seonggwangha .
Subdivision
Seongnam administratively consists of the three municipalities Sujeong-gu, Jungwon-gu and Bundang-gu .
