Club career

Seongnam FC

Hwang Ui-jo played soccer for Poongsaeng High School as a youth and then for the Yonsei University team . In the draft for the 2013 season he was selected by the first division club Seongnam FC . He made his debut on March 3 (1st matchday) when he started the 1: 2 home defeat by Suwon Samsung Bluewings and scored the only goal of his team. As a result, he did not manage to establish himself immediately in the starting lineup. Only in the relegation round from autumn 2013 he was used more and more often. During this season he played 22 league games in which he met twice. In the next game year 2014 he became a regular player and scored four goals in 28 league games. With Seongnam he won the Korean FA Cup in November 2014 .

Hwang's breakthrough came in the next 2015 season . His first brace in the top Korean league was on May 31 (matchday 13) when he shot Seongnam with two goals in the closing stages for a 2-1 home win against Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors . In 34 league games he scored 15 goals this season. In the following 2016 season he scored nine goals in 37 league games, but had to accept relegation to K League 2 with Seongnam .

Gamba Osaka

He then played in the Korean second division until the end of June 2017, before joining the Japanese first division club Gamba Osaka on July 1, 2017, after 150 competitive appearances and 45 goals for Seongnam FC . He made his debut on July 29 (19th matchday) in a 3-1 home win against city rivals Cerezo Osaka , when he started and scored again on his debut as for Seongnam. He ended the 2017 game year with three goals scored in 13 league games.

He became a key player for Gamba Osaka in the next 2018 season . In 27 league games he scored 16 goals, including three doubles. He was unable to maintain this goal quota in the 2019 game year and scored four goals in 19 league games until July 2019 before his move. In September 2018 he was named Korea’s Footballer of the Year .

Girondins Bordeaux

On July 15, 2019, Hwang Ui-jo moved to the French first division club Girondins Bordeaux for a transfer fee of two million euros , where he signed a four-year contract. On August 10 (1st matchday) he made his debut in the 1: 3 away defeat against SCO Angers for his new club. He scored his first goal two weeks later (3rd matchday) in a 2-0 away win against FCO Dijon . He quickly made it into the starting line-up and scored six goals in 24 league appearances in the 2019/20 season .

National team

On September 3, 2015, he made his debut in an 8-0 home win against Laos in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup for the South Korean senior team , when he came on for Suk Hyun-jun in the 62nd minute of the game . On October 13, he scored his first international goal in a 3-0 win in the friendly against Jamaica .

In August 2018, he took part in the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia with the South Korean U23 national team , as one of three approved older players . South Korea won the tournament and Hwang made a significant contribution to winning it with nine goals. In addition, no other player scored more goals in this competition.

With South Korea, he also took part in the 2019 Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates , where the team was eliminated in the quarter-finals against eventual tournament winner Qatar . Hwang has scored two goals in the group stage in five appearances, including the winning goal against the Philippines .
