history
founding
In 1975 the chairman of the Unification Church, Sun Myung Moon , declared that he wanted to found his own professional football club after the 1988 Summer Olympics . On September 20, 1988, the K League Committee approved the establishment of the Ilhwa Chunma FC Club, and on November 1 of the same year the club was officially incorporated at the Seoul Capital Hotel. The Unification Church became the owner of the association.
The first home ground was the Dongdaemun Stadium in Seoul , where they played their home games from 1989 to 1995. Park Jong-hwan was introduced as the club's first coach .
First seasons (1989–1991)
The first seasons were bad. In 1989 , the club finished the season on the penultimate, 1990 on the last and 1991 again on the penultimate place.
The first title successes (1992–1995)
In 1992 the club surprisingly reached 2nd place in the league and thus became runner-up for the first time. Also in the league cup one could record success for the first time. Already in the first edition of the league cup, the club was able to win the league cup.
In 1993 the club was able to celebrate the championship with 64 points after last year's runner-up. In the league cup, however, they could not defend the title and were only fifth.
In 1994 the club started as the defending champion in the league for the first time and was able to win the title again with 3 points ahead of Yukong Elephants . In the league cup, however, the club only reached fourth place.
In 1995 the club was able to celebrate the championship for the third time in a row. Until then, no other club had managed this. They were also able to record successes in the league cup. The club finished the league cup in second place and was thus runner-up. In the same year, the club first appeared in the Asian Club Championship , in which they reached 4th place in the 1994/95 season. In the following event for the 1995 season, the club was even able to win the title of the continental competition for the first time. The club thus became the most successful club in South Korea.
Cheonan Era (1996-1999)
After the end of the 1995 season, the K League wanted the club to move away from Seoul as part of the policy of decentralization . In this regard, the club received an offer from Cheonan, in which the city pays for the cost of the new stadium , which should be completed by 2001, and until then initially plays its home games in the Cheonan Oryong Stadium . The club accepted this offer and moved to Cheonan. After the successful move, the club was renamed Cheonan Ilhwa Chunma .
Nevertheless, the seasons in Cheonan went bad. In 1996 the club reached a very disappointing 8th place, which is why the coach was on leave during the season and was temporarily replaced by Lee jang-su until the end of the season. In the Korean FA Cup , which was held for the first time , they reached the round of 16 in the 1996 season . In the Adidas Cup, however, she was unable to build on the success of last year. In the league cup they were only fifth. However, they were successful in the Asia Super Cup . In 1996 they faced Bellmare Hiratsuka and were able to win the cup with a 5-3 out and a 1-0 away win. They also won the Afro-Asian Cup in 1996 . They also played against the Orlando Pirates , which ended 0-0 in the first leg and 5-0 in the second leg for Ilhwa.
For the new 1997 season , the club signed René Desaeyere, a foreign coach, for the first time . But even he could not record any successes in the league. Under him, the club only played in the lowest midfield. At the end of the season, the club reached an 8th place. In the cup, however, things went better. In 1997 , the club even reached the final, but failed at the Jeonnam Dragons with 0: 1. The club also improved in the Adidas Cup. In the end you reached a good 4th place in the League Cup, but in the Prospec Cup you couldn't get beyond the group phase. In the Asian Club Championship the club was able to fight its way through to the final, but then had to admit defeat 1: 2 against the Pohang Steelers .
In 1998 the club could not record any successes in the league and was even last for the first time in a long time. As a consequence, the coach René Desaeyere had to vacate his post and was replaced by Cha Kyeong-bok . In the FA Cup , the club was able to advance to the final, as it was last time. The club was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i . They lost the game on penalties 3: 4. There was also no success in the two league cups. In the Adidas Cup they failed in the group phase and in the Prospect Cup they only achieved 5th place.
The 1999 season was again mixed. In the league, the club did not get beyond 10th place again, but the club was able to win the FA Cup . Small successes could be recorded in the league cup. In the Adidas Cup you reached the quarter-finals, but in the South Korean Fire Cup you could fight for a good 3rd place. Despite the agreement with the city of Cheonan , which in the meantime also had the stadium built, the club decided to move to Seongnam and change its name to Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma FC , which was very angrily received in Cheonan.
Successful years under the Cha Kyeong-bok era (2000-2004)
After the move, the club was able to record successes again. In the 2000 season they were immediately third again and in the Korean FA Cup they advanced to the final. The Super Cup, however, was lost on penalties against Suwon Samsung Bluewings . In the Adidas Cup they were able to achieve second place and in the South Korean Fire Cup they came third.
The following years were the club's most successful times. In 2001 , 2002 and 2003 they were able to celebrate the championship again. In 2001 they finished third in the Adidas Cup. In 2002 the club reached 3rd place in the Korean FA Cup and won the Super Cup. In addition, the club was able to win the Adidas Cup for the second time after 1992. In 2003, however, they could only celebrate the league championship.
In 2004, the club ended the season on a weak 9th place in the table. In the Super Cup they lost 2-0 to Jeonbuk Hyundai , but they could win the Samsung Hauzen Cup. Internationally, the club reached the finals of the continental competition for the first time since 1997. Ittihad FC played in the final . In the first leg Ilhwa was able to prevail 3-1, but they lost the second leg with 0-5 and thus lost the final. At the end of 2004, Cha Kyeong-bok finished his work at Ilhwa and left the club.
Kim Hak-beom era (2005-2008)
Kim Hak-beom was introduced as the successor to Cha Kyeong-bok. Under him, however, the club could no longer really build on the successes of Cha Kyeong-bok. In 2005 the club again reached a 3rd place in the league, but in the FA Cup they were eliminated in the round of 16. Also in the league cup they were only a disappointed 8th place.
In 2006 the club was able to celebrate the league championship again. To this day, the club has not been able to win any league season after 2006. the same was true for the league cup. In the Samsung-Hauzen-Cup they reached the 2nd place. Until the league cup was abolished in 2011, this was her last major success in this tournament. In the FA Cup , the club surprisingly did not get past the sixteenth finals. In 2007 the club reached a 2nd place, but could not defend its title. In the FA Cup, the club failed in the last sixteen to Jeju United . In the penalty shootout they lost 4-5.
In 2008 , the club finished the season in 5th place. The club reached the quarter-finals this time in the cup, but lost 7-8 on penalties to the Pohang Steelers . In the league cup, the club again only reached the second round. After this unsuccessful season, Kim hak-beom was fired and Shin Tae-yong was introduced as the new coach.
Shin Tae-yong era (2009-2011)
In the first season under Shin Tae-yong, the club was able to achieve a second place in the league in 2009 . In the cup the club was able to fight its way through to the final, but failed on penalties with 2: 4 to the Suwon Samsung Bluewings . In the Peace Cup , however, the club only reached the quarter-finals. In 2010 the club did not get past 4th place. Also in the FA Cup they failed in the quarter-finals against Jeju United with 0-2. In the POSCO Cup , the club was eliminated in the group phase. The AFC Champions League, however, went much better. On November 13, 2010, the club won the AFC Champions League again with a 3-1 win against Iranian representatives FC Zob Ahan and thus qualified for participation in the 2010 FIFA Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi; the tournament ended in 4th place.
2011 , however, went badly in the league. At the end of the season the club only reached a very disappointing 10th place. Also in the Rush-and-Cash-Cup they were eliminated again in the group stage. The cup season, however, went much better. The club reached the final and won the title 1-0 over Suwon Samsung Bluewings .
The 2012 season was the club's toughest season. The club played exclusively against relegation instead of for the championship. In the end, they finished the season in 12th place. They were also eliminated early in the cup. In the round of 16 they lost 2-1 at home against Ulsan Hyundai early on from the cup competition. In the Champions League you also only reached the round of 16. At the end of the season Shin Tae-yong was given leave of absence as a trainer and Ahn Ik-su was introduced as a new trainer.
Seongnam FC era (2013-2015)
In the middle of the 2012 season it became known that the Unification Church intended to sell the association to the city of Ansan and to move the association. This caused massive protests from various fan camps in South Korea. In the end, Seongnam City bought the club and renamed it Seongnam FC . The association has been in municipal hands since 2013.
Under Ahn Ik-su, the club was able to place itself in the single-digit table area for the first time. The club finished the season in 8th place. In the Cup, however, the club reached the round of 16, but failed again at home on penalties with 2: 4 to the Pohang Steelers. After the end of the season, Ahn Ik-su had to leave and the club introduced a new coach, Park Jong-hwan .
In 2014 the club deteriorated in the league. The club finished the season in 9th place. The cup season, however, was much better. In the final, the club won the FA Cup with a 4-2 on penalties against FC Seoul . To date, winning the cup is the last title the club won. After two interim coaches had been sacked, a well-known coach, Kim Hak-beom, was introduced.
Under the new coach, the club was able to achieve 5th place for the first time. After all, they reached the quarter-finals in the cup. In the Champions League, however, the club was eliminated in the round of 16.
Relegation and a new beginning (2016-2017)
The 2016 season turned out to be the worst in the club's history. While the club played for the international places up to the 25th matchday, the club suddenly collapsed in terms of results. The club slipped down to 8th place by the 33rd matchday and now played against relegation. The club then dismissed Kim Hak-beom and instead the interim mode Gu Sang-bum was discontinued. However, he could not prevent the crash either. By the last matchday, the club slipped to the 11th and the relegation place associated with it. He was also dismissed without further ado and Byeon Seong-hwan was introduced as the next interim trainer. After the club played 0-0 against Gangwon FC in the first leg , the club was able to fight for a 1-1 at home against Gangwon FC. Nevertheless, the club had to relegate due to the away rule. After the relegation games, Byeon Seong-hwan was also released. The club was relegated to the 2nd division for the first time in the club's history .
In the second league, the club repositioned itself and gave as the season goal of direct promotion. With Park Kyeong-hun , the club hired an experienced coach. After the club was in between but until the 23rd match day last in the league, the team was able to stabilize and still reach 4th place. There they failed to Asan Mugunghwa FC and thus the goal of recovery was missed. After the season ended, Park Kyeong-hun also had to go.
Present (2018−)
For the new season, the former Gwangju FC coach Nam Ki-il was signed .
