Gu Sang-bum studied at Incheon University and played for the university team during this time. He was there from 1983 to 1885.

Football career in South Korea

Sang-bum was introduced as a player at the age of 22 by Lucky Goldstar Hwangso, today's FC Seoul. He stayed there until 1993. During that time he won the K League in 1990 . After 133 appearances and eleven goals, he left the club, which had meanwhile been renamed LG Cheetahs, in the direction of Daewoo Royals, today's Busan IPark . There he played for a season. During his time there he scored 24 missions and one goal. In 1995 he moved to the Pohang POSCO Atoms , today's Pohang Steelers. There he only made 14 missions and two goals. After the end of the season he announced the end of his career. His only title remained the championship title from 1990.

National team career

In 1988 he was called up for the first time in the national team. His greatest triumph with the national team was in 1990 at the Asian Games in Beijing. There he received bronze with his national team. In 1994 he ended his career in the national team. He played 67 times for the national team and scored three goals during that time.

Career as a coach

In 1998 he became the coach of the South Korean national soccer team . He stayed there until 1999 and then let his contract expire. In 2001 he became a coach at Kyungshin High School . His task there was to strengthen the youth sector. In 2003 he left Kyungshin High School. In 2004 he became an assistant trainer at his old university, Incheon University . He stayed there until 2008. As success did not materialize, his contract was not extended any further. In 2009 he was introduced as a scout at Gangwon FC . His job was to recruit young players for the club and keep an eye out for talent. In 2011, however, the contract was not extended at his request. The following year he went to Sangju Sangmu FC and became an assistant coach. After the club had withdrawn its first team after the first half of the season, he was also dismissed with the coaching staff. In 2016 he returned as a trainer at Pungsaeng High School . His work there did not last long. After Seongnam FC wanted him as an interim coach until the end of the season, his high school contract was terminated and he became an interim coach at Seongnam FC. After the relegation at Seongnam FC was determined, he was released. Shortly thereafter, he signed another contract with Pungsaeng High School as a coach.
