history

Prehistory (1984-2010)

The logo of the previous club

The club was originally founded in 1984 as a semi-professional Sangmu FC . Until 1983, various military associations existed in South Korea - these should be merged in Sangmu FC. 2003 went out of Sangmu FC, the professional Gwangju Sangmu FC , so that professional players who did their military service could continue to play at the same level. Sporting successes could not be achieved in Gwangju. The club usually ended the seasons in the lower positions. In mid-2010, the city administration decided to set up its own professional club, which is why the club had to leave the city at the end of 2010.

Foundation (2011)

The military found the city of Sangju as the new location for the club . The military signed a cooperation agreement with the municipality of Sangju, according to which the association was able to settle in Sangju. The club was officially founded on February 26, 2011 as Sangju Sangmu Phoenix FC . The club's first coach was Lee Su-cheol .

First seasons (2011-2014)

The premier season in the league was overgrown. Up to the 14th matchday, the club was able to stay among the top four teams before they slipped down to 14th place by the end of the season. In July 2011, the club dismissed Lee Su-cheol due to the sporting failures and replaced him on an interim basis with Kim Tae-wan . Even in the league cup, the club didn't get far. The club was eliminated after the group stage. In the Korean FA Cup 2011 , the club was able to record at least one small success. In the 3rd main round they played against the semi-professional club Gangneung City FC , against which they could prevail in extra time with 2: 1. In the next round of the last sixteen, however, they were eliminated 1: 2 against Ulsan Hyundai .

For the 2012 season, Park Hang-seo was introduced as a new trainer. In the 2012 season there were relegation places for the first time to the K League Challenge , which was founded in 2013 , which is why the season's goal was relegation. Up to the 14th matchday, the club was on a relegation zone. From the 15th matchday, however, the club repeatedly slipped to a relegation zone. In the relegation round, however, the club no longer managed to win against the direct relegation opponents, which is why they ended up being last placed, 18 points behind the penultimate. The cup season was similar to the previous season. In the 3rd main round, they again faced a semi-professional club. The club won the game against Ulsan Hyundai Mipo Dolphins 2-1. In the next round of the last sixteen, however, they lost to Daejeon Citizen 2: 4 on penalties.

For the premiere season of the K League Challenge, the club appeared as a promotion favorite and also changed its name. The club was now called Sangju Sangmu FC . After a long fight for first place against Police FC , the club competed in the relegation against Gangwon FC , which they won 4: 1 & 0: 1 with ease. Thus, the club was able to return to the House of Lords after 1 year. In the cup, the club was relegated to the first division in round 3. There they received Mokpo City FC , which they could beat 4-1 with confidence. In the last sixteen they then went up against Incheon United , against which they lost again with 1: 2.

In the 2014 season, the club was promoted, which is why the season goal was relegation. For the entire season, the club played against relegation. In the end, they went down again, 2 points behind the penultimate. The cup season, however, went much better. In the 3rd main round they competed against the Suwon Samsung Bluewings . The game ended 4-3 on penalties. In the following round, the club faced Cheonan City FC . The club won the game 1-0. In the quarter-finals they received Gangwon FC , against whom they could also prevail 6-5 on penalties. In the semifinals, the club received FC Seoul at home . The game was lost 1-0 to Kim Ju-yeong .

Promotion and tight relegation (2015-2019)

The 2015 season was a duel for promotion between Sangju Sangmu FC and Daegu FC . On the last day of the match Sangju was in first place with a 1 point lead. A win for Daegu would have meant direct promotion. But since Daegu did not get more than 1-1 against Bucheon FC in 1995 , Sangju was in first place after the last matchday due to their better goal difference and thus a direct climber. In the cup meanwhile, the club was surprisingly eliminated against the semi-professional club Gyeongju KHNP FC in the third main round with 0: 1. After the end of the season, Park Hang-seo left the club. The successor coach was Jo Jin-ho .

In 2016, relegation was again set as the season's goal. The club played a very good season. At the end of the main round, the club was in 6th place, which meant the championship round for them. In the championship round, however, the club could not set any accents against the stronger clubs, which is why the season ended successfully for the club with the qualification for the championship round. In the cup, the club was surprisingly eliminated again. In the 4th main round they surprisingly lost 1: 2 against Dankook University . Jo Jin-ho switched to Busan IPark after the season , which is why long-time co-trainer Kim Tae-wan took over this role.

In the 2017 season, however, it was not possible to match the previous year's performance. After the end of the season, they were the penultimate in the relegation against the play-off winner from the 2nd division, Busan IPark. The first leg ended 1-0 for Sangju, while the second leg ended 0-1 after 90 minutes. In the subsequent penalty shootout, Sangju was happy to prevail with 5: 4. Even in the cup, the previous year's performance could not be repeated. In the second round they met the second division Bucheon FC 1995 , against which they could win 2-0. However, the club lost again in the quarterfinals against Ulsan Hyundai with 1: 3 and thus retired early.

The 2018 season did not go well either. After the end of the regular season they were 3 points ahead of the last placed in 10th place. The club was able to save itself on the last match day against FC Seoul with a victory from relegation. In the cup, however, the club was surprisingly eliminated again. In the 4th main round they played against fourth division team Yangpyeong FC and lost 4-2 on penalties.

The 2019 season went much better. After the end of the regular season they were only in 7th place due to the poorer goal difference, which means they just missed the championship round. In the relegation round, the club was confidently placed 7th and thus the best of their round. The cup season was also much better. In their first round, they played against Seongnam FC . The game historically ended with a 10-9 penalty win. In the next round, Jeju United was received . This game also ended historically with 13:12 on penalties for Sangju. In the quarter-finals you played against Changwon City FC , against which you could win 2-1. In the semifinals they played against Daejeon Korail FC . The first leg ended 1: 1, while the second leg ended regularly 2: 2, but surprisingly lost 4: 2 on penalties.

Last season (2020)

At the beginning of 2020, the military announced that they could not be active at one location for a maximum of 10 years in a row that the cooperation with the city of Sangju would not be extended any further. Shortly afterwards, the city administration of Sangju announced that it had plans for its own municipal association and that they wanted to implement them for the 2021 season. In response to these two reports, the K League announced that Sangju Sangmu FC had been relegated. The successor Sangmu Club and the Municipal Sangju Club both have to compete in K League 2 in 2021. Gimcheon, Gumi, Goyang, Yongin and Gimhae are considered new possible locations for the military.
