Suwon FC is a soccer franchise based in Suwon , South Korea . The franchise currently plays in the K League 2 , the second-highest division in South Korea. The franchise is a municipal association owned by the city of Suwon.

history

prehistory

The city of Suwon was home to Suwon Samsung Bluewings, a professional club from the K League , which had a very good youth academy. But since not all youth players made the leap into the professional team, there were unspecific considerations to want to found a semi-professional club. The city of Suwon later announced that it had a desire to maintain a semi-professional club in the city, which is why plans were made to found a possible club. After it was announced that a semi-professional league would start operating in 2003 with the Korea National League , the city of Suwon initiated the establishment of the club.

founding

At the end of 2002 the foundation followed and on March 15, 2003 the official foundation of the association took place. The club was registered under the then name Suwon City FC . The club's first coach was Kim Chang-kyeom . The club joined the newly formed Korea National League after the club was founded .

In their first season, the club reached 6th place in the first half of the season and 3rd place in the subsequent second half of the season. The club failed very close to the championship games. In the Korean FA Cup, the club reached the round of 16, but failed to Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i with 0: 2. In the regional Gyeonggi-do Cup, however, they were able to win the cup on their first participation. In the following season, the club failed with fifth place in the first half and third place in the second half of the championship games. The club reached the final in the KNL Cup , but lost 3-1 to Ulsan Hyundai Mipo Dolphins . In the Korean FA Cup, the club reached the second round again, but this time failed to Daejeon Citizen , which they had lost 2-0. However, the club was able to defend the regional Gyeonggi-do Cup and win again.

In 2005, the club reached for the first time by the first round. Place the championship games. There they met Incheon Korail FC . In the final first leg they lost 1: 2. The final second leg also ended 1: 2 against Suwon and so they were only runner-up. They met Suwon Samsung Bluewings for the first time in the Korean FA Cup in 2005 . In the Suwon derby , Suwon FC led 1-0 up to 89 minutes before Kim Dae-eui equalized for the Bluewings. They lost the derby 3: 5 on penalties . The club was still successful. In the regional Gyeonggi-do Cup, they won the cup for the third time in a row. The club was also able to celebrate a success in the league cup. There they were able to win the KNL Cup for the first time. In 2006, the club could not qualify for the championship games again. After a first round-5. Place and a back round 6. Place was the end of the league season for them. They were also not successful in the Korean FA Cup. In the second main round, the club was eliminated by a 4-5 penalty shoot-out defeat against Incheon Korail FC. They started as defending champions for the first time in the KNL Cup, but failed in the quarter-finals to Ulsan Hyundai Mipo Dolphins on penalties 8: 9. In the Regional Gyeonggi-do Cup, however, they were able to win the trophy for the fourth time.

In 2007 the club achieved a second round 1. Place again the championship games. In the final, they met Ulsan Hyundai Mipo Dolphins. Suwon lost the first leg 3-0, the second leg they lost 4-1 and were only runner-up again. The cup season, however, went better this time. The club reached the 3rd main round, but failed with a 4-5 penalty shootout against league rivals Goyang KB Kookmin Bank FC . The KNL Cup also went better. They reached the final again, this time facing Changwon City FC . They won the final game on penalties 4-2. The club was also able to win the trophy on their fifth participation in the Gyeonggi-do Cup. In 2008, the club was able to win the championship games through a second round 1. Qualify again. In the semifinals they met Busan Kyotong FC , which they could beat 2-0. In the final they met Ulsan Mipo Dolphins again. The first leg ended with 1: 1. The second leg also ended with a 1: 1 after 90 minutes. In the subsequent penalty shootout, however, Suwon lost again 4: 5 against Ulsan and was thus again only runner-up. In the Korean FA Cup this time the club was able to advance to the 4th main round, where they lost 3: 4 on penalties at home against Honam University . In the KNL Cup, the club failed surprisingly early in the group stage. In the Regional Gyeonggi-do Cup, however, the club was able to win the cup title again.

In 2009 the club reached a 7th first round place, but was able to fight for 2nd place in the second half of the season, so that they qualified again for the championship games. In the semifinals they were defeated by Gimhae City FC with 1: 2. In the Korean FA Cup they were able to reach the 4th main round, but lost against Daegu FC with 1: 3. In the KNL Cup, the club was able to reach the quarter-finals again, but lost 3: 5 on penalties against Gimhae City FC. For the first time in the club's history, the club could not win the Gyeonggi-do Cup. In 2010 the league season was mixed. In the first half of the season they achieved a poor 10th place, but were able to finish the second half of the season with the same number of points as the first place. In the following championship games they met in the semifinals on Gangneung City FC , which they could defeat 3-1. In the final, they met Daejeon KHNP FC . They won the first leg 2-0, while the second leg was lost 0-1. But since they won the final according to the away goal regulation, they were able to celebrate the league championship for the first time. They were successful in the Korean FA Cup. In their first round they met Daegu FC again, but this time they were able to defeat 1-0. In the last sixteen they met Suwon Samsung Bluewings. In the new edition of the Suwon Derby, the municipal club lost again and lost 4-1 to the Bluewings. In the KNL Cup they were able to advance to the semifinals, but failed to Ulsan Hyundai Mipo Dolphins with 0: 2. As in the previous year, the club was again unable to win the Gyeonggi-do Cup.

In 2011 the league season did not go well. In the end they only achieved a disappointing 7th place. In the Korean FA Cup there was again the Suwon derby against the Bluewings. The club failed again this time, but just 0: 1 at the Bluewings. In the KNL Cup, the team did not get beyond the group stage. The club was able to win the regional Gyeonggi-do Cup for the first time. After the end of the season, the club announced that the contract with long-term coach Kim Chang-kyeom would not be renewed. The youth coach of the club Jo Deok-je was introduced as his successor .

2012 was her last KNL season. They finished the season in 9th place. In the Korean FA Cup, they faced Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma FC in the third main round . The cup game ended 1: 5 against Suwon. They won the KNL Cup for the last time. In the final they met Ulsan Hyundai Mipo Dolphins, which they defeated 2-0. They were also able to win the Gyeonggi-do Cup again. After the end of the season, the club left the KNL and joined the K League . The club renamed itself to Suwon FC .

The club entered the newly founded K League Challenge in 2013 . In their first K League season, the club finished fourth. In the Korean FA Cup, they met Daegu FC in their first round, which they could again beat 1-0. In the following round they met the Jeonnam Dragons , which they could beat 4: 3. They then met Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in the quarter-finals , but they lost 7-2. In 2014 they were only 6th in the league. In their first round of the Korean FA Cup they faced Jeju United . After 120 minutes it was 3: 3. They won the cup game 5-4 on penalties. Then they met at Busan IPark. However, the game ended 2: 3. In 2015, the club achieved a good 3rd place and qualified for the play-off games for the first time. In the semi-finals they met Seoul E-Land FC . The game ended 3: 3, but since they had home rights, the club qualified for the play-off final. In the final they met Daegu FC, which they defeated 2-1, which meant they were relegated to the K League Classic . In the relegation they met Busan IPark. The first leg ended 1-0 for Suwon and the second leg they won 2-0. Thus, the club rose to the K League Classic for the first time. In their first round of the Korean FA Cup they met Ulsan Hyundai Mipo Dolphins, which they lost 2-1.

In their first first division season, the club was in the meantime on the 3rd matchday in 4th place, but quickly slipped to 10th place and later on the relegation 12th place. During the season, they met their city rivals Suwon Samsung Bluewings for the first time in the league. The first game was lost with 1: 2. Kim Byeong-oh scored the equalizer for Suwon FC at the interim 1: 1. 11,866 spectators attended the game. In the second league city derby, the team lost 1-0 in the Suwon World Cup stadium . 18,891 spectators came to this duel. In the third league game, Suwon FC won the derby for the first time with a goal in the 96th minute from Kim Byeong-oh. In the subsequent round of relegation they met again. Suwon FC lost just 3-2 to the Bluewings. The stadium attracted 9,607 spectators for the derby. They also met Seongnam FC for the first time in the league. The derby was called the Gidbal Derby . In the Korean FA Cup, the club met Daejeon Citizen in the 4th main round . They lost the game 1: 2.

In 2017 they competed again in the K League Challenge. The season goal was promotion, but the club only reached the 6th place in the league. Things didn't go well in the Korean FA Cup either. In the 3rd main round they met Seongnam FC. They lost the game on penalties 4-5. In August 2017, Jo Deok-je was relieved of his duties as a coach from the club and released. Jo Jong-hwa took over temporarily until the end of the season. Then a new trainer was introduced with Kim Dae-eui .

Kim Dae-eui Era (2018-)

The club gave promotion as a season goal and signed new players. The club signed, among others, Alex Lima from Houston Dynamo from the MLS . In addition, Aléx Bruno, a player from league rivals Gyeongnam FC and Fernando Viana from al-Dhafra FC from the UAE Arabian Gulf League , was signed.

Because of their proximity, the fans of Suwon FC are rivaling the fans of Seoul E-Land FC ( Challenge Supermatch ), as well as Seongnam FC ( Gidbal Derby ) and Suwon Samsung Bluewings ( Suwon Derby ). Friendships are not cultivated.
