The Suwon World Cup Stadium , also known as the Big Bird Stadium , is a football stadium in the South Korean city of Suwon in Gyeonggi-do Province . Since 2001 it has been the home of Suwon Samsung Bluewings , a franchise of the K League Classic , the highest soccer league in South Korea.
history
The stadium was built specifically for the 2002 World Cup . A year before the World Cup, it was one of three South Korean venues for the 2001 Confederations Cup . The 230 million US dollars expensive sports facility was opened after the start of construction on 15 November 1996 on 13 May 2,001th It currently offers 43,288 seats, of which 208 are handicapped accessible, 907 are VIP seats and 1,312 are for the press. The stadium building was given the nickname “Big Bird” because of the roof construction on the back straight, which is reminiscent of the wings of a bird. It is the only stadium in South Korea that was built with the help of voluntary donations from citizens. The names and addresses of the donors are engraved on the back of the seats. In 2017, the venue was used for games of the U-20 World Cup .
