The Jeju World Cup Stadium ( kor .: 제주 월드컵 경기장) is a football stadium in the South Korean city of Seogwipo in the island province of Jeju-do .
history
On February 20, 1999, construction began on the arena, which was one of ten South Korean stadiums for the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea . The sports facility with 42,256 seats was inaugurated on December 9, 2001. The two-story main grandstand and parts of the rear grandstands are covered by a sickle-shaped roof structure. The roof, with its glass-reinforced PTFE - membrane and an area of 16,000 square meters is suspended on six poles with steel cables. Three games of the World Cup tournament took place in Seogwipo. After the World Cup, the capacity was reduced and today it still offers 35,657 seats. The stadium served as one of eight venues for the U-17 World Cup in 2007 and the U-20 World Cup in 2017 .
The K League Classic - Jeju United franchise has been playing its home games in the Jeju World Cup stadium since 2006 .
