The FIFA FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2017 (officially 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup ) was the 21st edition of this tournament was held from 20 May to 11 June 2017 in South Korea instead.

Application process

Interested nations had until the 63rd FIFA Congress in Mauritius in May 2013 to officially apply to host the U-20 World Cup. By the closing date for entries, the following twelve nations had applied for the event.

England withdrew its candidacy before the decision in December. The reason given was the award of the U-20 World Cup in 2013 to Turkey and the associated problem of awarding the competition to Europe again at such an early stage. South Africa also withdrew. The reason for this was the award of the 2016 U-20 Women's World Cup to South Africa and thus to the South African Football Association . During the 2014 World Cup , South Africa announced that it would return the hosting rights to FIFA as there were repeated cases of match-fixing in the country. From the remaining ten candidates, at the meeting of the FIFA Executive Committee on December 5, 2013 in Brazil, South Korea was chosen as host. After the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2001 and the 2002 World Cup together with Japan and the 2007 U-17 World Cup , South Korea is hosting a major FIFA competition for the fourth time.

Venues

When South Korean Football Association , nine cities had applied to host matches of the final round. Of these, Cheonan , Daejeon , Incheon , Seogwipo , Jeonju and Suwon won the contract, while Seoul , Pohang and Ulsan were not selected.

referee

On April 4, 2017, FIFA announced the referees nominated for the U-20 World Cup. The list included 22 referees from all six continental associations. In addition to the 44 assistant referees, 21 referees were appointed to act as video assistants. The list of referees was completed by five fourth officials .

Felix Brych from Munich was nominated as the only German representative to the main referees. After he was entrusted by UEFA with the management of the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League final , which took place in Cardiff on June 3, 2017 , Brych was replaced by Szymon Marciniak from Poland, who was originally only nominated as video referee . Felix Zwayer from Berlin acted as video referee.
