At the 2010 World Cup, Espinosa was the assistant to the Uruguayan referee Jorge Larrionda in four games: in Group D in Australia against Serbia , in Group E in Cameroon against Denmark , in the preliminary round match Ivory Coast against Portugal in Group G and in the round of 16 between Germany and England. In the 38th minute of the game, Frank Lampard shot at the crossbar of the German goal, from where the ball landed about 40 centimeters behind the goal line and jumped back against the crossbar before the German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer could secure the ball. Espinosa decided to "continue playing" when asked by referee Larrionda. After the game, Espinosa's mistake triggered a lot of media coverage, which led to a discussion about the introduction of technical aids in football, such as video evidence. FIFA announced that Espinosa and Larrionda would not have any further appearances at the 2010 World Cup.
