The cemetery chapel in Calvörde is a listed chapel of the Evangelical Church in the market town of Calvörde . It was built in 1927.

The first cemetery chapels

Originally, all of the deceased in the parish of Calvörde were buried in the cemetery around St. George's Church . The deceased were laid out in the tower room of St. George's Church. In 1616 a new cemetery was laid out in Hünerdorf on the so-called Clawes-Breite, and a new chapel was built on it, the spire of which can be seen on the left on the Merian engraving of Calvörde. At the time of the Corpus Bonorum (1777) this chapel with the cemetery still existed, but a new chapel had to be built because the previous one was destroyed in the fire of 1700.

Today's cemetery chapel

In 1789 today's cemetery was laid out without a cemetery chapel. The dead were driven by hearse from St. George's Church to the cemetery. The way from the church to the cemetery is about one kilometer, the lack of a cemetery chapel in the new Calvörde cemetery was felt to be painful. It was not decided until the summer of 1926 to build a cemetery chapel, and in autumn a loan of 20,000 Reichsmarks was taken out. Students at the Technical University of Braunschweig produced six different designs in a competition. The design of the cand. Archit. Martha Andrä, Braunschweig, came to the execution. Construction began on July 1, 1927. On July 6th, 1927 the foundation stone was laid and on Sunday, October 30th, 1927 the inauguration took place.

The monumental-looking chapel was built from humpback ashlars . The corners of the building protrude somewhat in the form of a risalit , which gives the chapel a defensive appearance. There are nine narrow, rectangular windows on the south and north sides, with the middle five being longer than those in the risalits. The main entrance, on the east side, can be reached through a stone step in which one is led through a small hallway directly into the hall. There is another exit on the east side. The roof construction deserves a special mention. It is designed as a high, steep hipped roof . In 2011 the cemetery chapel was completely renovated .
