The Third Anglo-Afghan War ( English Third (Anglo-) Afghan War ) of 1919 was one of three military conflicts between 1839 and 1919 between the British Empire and Afghanistan , the Anglo-Afghan Wars .
It began on May 6, 1919 and ended with an armistice on August 8, 1919. The British were supported by Pashtun warriors. Sultan Amanullah Khan was initially able to record successes against the British. In return, a Handley Page HP15 bombed the Royal Palace in Kabul on May 24, 1919, which was less of a military than a psychological success. The Peace of Rawalpindi of August 8, 1919 established the provisional recognition of Afghanistan as a sovereign and independent state by Great Britain.
