Emil Levy
Emil Levy (born October 23, 1855 in Hamburg , † November 28, 1917 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German Romanist , Provençalist and lexicographer .
life and work
Levy did his doctorate in Berlin in 1880 with Adolf Tobler on Guilhem Figueira, a Provencal troubadour (Berlin: S. Liebrecht 1880) and completed his habilitation in Freiburg in 1883 with Fritz Neumann with The Troubadour Bartholome Zorzi (Halle: Niemeyer 1883). In Freiburg he became an adjunct professor. Levy spent a long time in Paris and southern France and associated with the Provençalist Camille Chabaneau. Levy's outstanding achievement is the Old Provençal Dictionary Provençal Supplement Dictionary. Corrections and additions to M. [François] Raynouard's Lexique roman [1838–1844], 8 volumes, Leipzig 1892–1924 (Reprinted in Hildesheim 1973).
He was married to Rosette van Praag, her son Friedrich Leyden was a German geographer and diplomat.
