Fritz Neumann

Fritz Neumann (born April 23, 1854 in Warnemünde ; † February 3, 1934 in Heidelberg ) was a German Romanist .

life and work

Neumann received his doctorate in Heidelberg in 1876 with Karl Bartsch on the Germanic elements in the Provençal and French languages, treated according to their phonetic relationships, and obtained his habilitation there in 1878 with On the Phonics and Flexion of Old French, mainly from private documents from Vermandois (Heilbronn 1878). In 1881 he became an associate professor in Heidelberg. From 1882 to 1890 he was the first professor of Romance philology in Freiburg (full professor from 1883) and from 1890 to 1924 the first professor of Romance philology in Heidelberg . Neumann was editor of the literary journal for Germanic and Romance philology for many years . Neumann's students included Emil Levy , Leonardo Olschki and Karl Vossler . From 1909 he was an extraordinary member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .
