The St. George's Church in spots Calvörde is a church of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brunswick . It is the main church of the Parish Association Calvörde-Uthmöden.

history

First church

The first parish church was founded in 1110 by Count Dietrich von Hillersleben . It is known that it was consecrated to Saint Georgi and built as a Romanesque building. In 1492 she fell victim to a fire.

Second church

Then a half-timbered building was erected, which was demolished in 1609 due to dilapidation. A winged altar from this church has been preserved, which was sold on August 15, 1613 and is now in the church in Dannefeld .

Third Church

A new church was built between March 1613 and May 1614, and the building invoice is still available today. At that time, Duke Joachim Karl stayed at Calvörde Castle for 7 years and donated a masonry altar, a sermon chair, a bronze baptismal font and the organ. The church tower with 5 bells (construction started in 1646) was completed in 1650. He is visible on the Merian engraving from 1652. On October 6th, 1700 a fire destroyed the church. Only the altar candlesticks from 1615 were saved.

Today's church

The funds for the construction of today's St. George's Church were raised through savings of the citizens and through the sale of the Philippsche Gut belonging to the church to the head captain of Lautitz. Duke Anton Ulrich also donated 50 thalers for the new church. The church was 80 feet long, 44 feet wide, and 22 feet high. This church was covered with a broken roof with 13 mansard windows , it has 2 galleries. The perimeter wall is 3 feet thick and supported from the outside by 12 pillars. Today's sacristy is located on the stairs to the pulpit. To the right of the sacristy was a room in which the von Lautitz family coffins stood, but it was walled up in 1777. There are still coffins under the sacristy.

The altar is made of wood, on it stand the brass altar candlesticks that were saved from the fire of 1700. The old bells were cast into new bells in Isernhagen (in the Calvörder Feldmark). In 1702 a tower clock was purchased. It was not until 1729 that a tower of 6 feet thick masonry was erected, the height of which was 68 feet. In 1742 a new organ was installed.

In 1861 the interior of the church was completely redesigned, the structure was equipped with a simple gable roof and a flat ceiling inside.

In 1887/88 the new 52 meter high church tower was built; it got new bells and the church got a new interior painting. During the First World War , the two big bells had to be delivered in 1917, only one bell remained. In 1922, the two delivered bells were replaced (1st bell 2,407 kg, 2nd bell 1,084 kg). The cement font was a gift from the Vibrants family, who provided the mayor of Calvord for over 200 years. In 1909 the church was electrified and the old gas lighting system from 1882 could be removed. Most of the interior was renovated in 1985, followed by extensive ceiling work both inside and outside in 2011.

There is a sundial on the south side of the church.

Furnishing

A three-sided pulpit from the beginning of the 17th century (1609) comes from Duke Joachim Karl . Without a canopy over the high altar, at the corners Corinthian columns with heads and fruits in the Renaissance style on the base, but standing on baroque consoles. The princely chair and the organ are donated by the Dowager Duchess Anna Sophie von Brandenburg (1659). The organ is made with baroque leaf panels in the corners and a similar hanging structure on the sides from 1742. The instrument has been expanded and rebuilt a few times; last happened in 1858 under the organ builder August Troch from Neuhaldensleben and in 1903 by Hugo Hide. The accessible prieche has a baroque railing. On the long sides there are two-storey wooden preachers, which are lit up through skylights. Two glass paintings with the twelve-field Braunschweiger coat of arms held by lions and provided with five helmets , according to the inscription a gift from the Dukes Rudolf August and Anton Ulrich from 1703.
