history

Velsdorf 1917

The place Velsdorf was first mentioned in a sales deed in 1471. The village, located on the north side of Calvörde behind the Isernhagen forest area, is of German origin, but was occupied by Wendish residents in the 11th century. The place became desolate in the course of the 12th and 13th centuries and from 1500 on it belonged to Calvörde Castle. The village is characterized by the roundness-like arrangement of the large farms, which suggest Wendish origins. Velsdorf had a school in the 18th century.

Velsdorf town center 1792

Historically, Velsdorf is connected to the town of Calvörde, as an exclave of the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel .

On January 1, 2010, the previously independent municipalities of Velsdorf, Berenbrock (with Elsebeck and Lössewitz ), Dorst , Grauingen , Klüden , Mannhausen , Wegenstedt and Zobbenitz merged with the town of Calvörde to form the new municipality of Calvörde.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved on January 10, 1996 by the Magdeburg Regional Council.

Blazon : “Split by silver and green; in it a rooted tree stump in mixed up colors with two green oak leaves. "

Velsdorf had previously had an unauthorized seal showing a tree stump. With this picture, the municipality refers to the oaks (pedunculate oaks) in the local area mark or in the immediate vicinity, some of which are several hundred years old and significant for the flora of the region. It is assumed that the place, which traces its founding back to Slavic ethnic groups, was once created by clearing the mighty oak forests, which existed as closed forest areas in the early Middle Ages. The oak stump in the coat of arms is supposed to express that too.

The coat of arms was designed by the municipal heraldist Jörg Mantzsch .

flag

The flag is striped green and white and has the municipal coat of arms in the center.
