Bundesstrasse 188
The federal highway 188 (abbreviation: B 188 ) is one of the longer federal highways across northern Germany. It runs from west to east through the states of Lower Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg and connects the B 3 with the B 5 .
course
Lower Saxony
The federal highway 188 begins at the gates of the Lower Saxon state capital Hanover at the junction Burgdorf of the federal highway 3 Hanover – Celle. The B 188 then passes Burgdorf . It continues via Altmerdingsen as a bypass road past Uetze to the Kreuzkrug , where the B 214 Celle - Braunschweig is crossed. The B 444 in the direction of Peine begins about two hundred meters south .
On a bypass road completed in 2004, it goes through the local asparagus and sugar beet growing area , past Meinersen and on a scenic route as the “German Alps – Baltic Sea Vacation Route ” through Gifhorn (45 km) past the mill museum , where the four-lane extension of the A 391 developed B 4 from Braunschweig to Uelzen is crossed. Thereafter, the route runs directly few kilometers along the river of Aller , here in the Aller- Urstromtal sexy meander has formed. The road runs through the communities of Sassenburg , Osloß and Weyhausen . Shortly before Wolfsburg, the road crosses the Elbe Lateral Canal and the motorway junction on the A 39 Salzgitter –Braunschweig – Wolfsburg, which is currently (2012) the end of this motorway and at the same time forms an intersection with the B 248 to Salzwedel .
It then goes to Wolfsburg (66 km). North of Velpke , behind Wolfsburg, the B 244 is crossed from Helmstedt to Wittingen . To the northwest of Oebisfelde , the road crosses the state border between Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt.
Saxony-Anhalt
The journey continues on a scenic route through the Drömling Nature Park to Gardelegen (116 km). Here the B 188 meets the B 71 from Uelzen and leads past the sparsely populated Colbitzer Heide through the Altmark ; on this stretch, the B 188 takes the scenic route -Beinamen " Romanesque Road ". At Dahlen , the B 188 merges with the B 189 Pritzwalk - Magdeburg in order to bypass the cathedral city of Stendal (153 km) as a bypass road for 5.5 km .
With a slight curve to the south, the road leads to Tangermünde (163 km) and on the only bridge between Magdeburg and Wittenberge over the Elbe . East of Wust (Wust-Fischbeck) the B 188 crosses the state border to Brandenburg (177 km).
Brandenburg
The federal road 188 now reaches the Havel , where there is a lock well worth seeing , and Rathenow (190 km). The B 188 ends after another 24 km at the Friesacker district of Briesen and joins the B 5 from Hamburg , which will reach Berlin after about 50 km .
history
Previous routes and names
The Prussian Staatschaussee No. 84b between Stendal, Tangermünde and Fischbeck was built between 1844 and 1847 to connect Stendal to the then newly built Staatschaussee 85 (part of today's B 107 ) between Genthin and Havelberg . The middle section from Stendal to Wolfsburg was built between 1853 and 1855 as Kreischaussee, which was built solely at the expense of the districts involved. Only after the Tangermünde Elbe bridge was built in 1933 could this road be used continuously.
Reichsstrasse 188 from 1936 to 1949
In 1936 the entire route was rededicated to Reichsstrasse 188 . The aim was to better connect the city of Wolfsburg, which was still being planned at the time . Due to the division of Germany after the Second World War , this road between Oebisfelde and Velpke was interrupted. The boundary was drawn at the level of the Velpker estate Büstedt, directly on the Allerbrücke .
Highway 188 from 1949 to 1990
The eastern section of the route was taken up by the GDR with the designation Fernverkehrsstraße 188 in its route network. There was a regular border crossing until the border was closed. When the border closed, the road in the immediate vicinity of the border was dismantled.
The border was opened in the area of the F 188 / B 188 on November 26, 1989 at 6 a.m. An information board reminds of this today. On July 1, 1990, border controls were suspended.
Bundesstrasse 188 from 1949 to 1990
In 1949, the Federal Republic of Germany added the western section of the route to its route network as Bundesstraße 188.
After German reunification
With German reunification on October 3, 1990, the F 188 was merged with the B 188.
The B 188 ran through Tangermünde until 2001 . From 1997 to 2001 a new Elbe bridge and a bypass north of the city were built.
The Lower Saxony state authority for road construction and traffic - Hanover division - rebuilt the Burgdorf bypass as part of the B 188 and opened it to traffic in October 2009.
As a further construction phase of the B 188, the Rathenow bypass was completed in September 2010; Construction began in 2004. The B 188 now runs west of Rathenow near Großwudicke on the south side of the Berlin – Hanover ICE line .
On December 6, 2010, the Danndorf and Velpke bypasses were opened east of Wolfsburg to the state border with Saxony-Anhalt in the course of the Bundesstrasse 188. At the same time, the subsequent bypass of Oebisfelde in Saxony-Anhalt was opened. Construction of the 10.7 kilometer long road began on September 23, 2009. A large part of the route runs parallel to the north side of the ICE route Berlin – Hanover . The eastern continuation along the railway line to Frankenfelde is in the planning phase.
