Kästorf is a district of Wolfsburg in Lower Saxony in the north of the city, between the B 188 and the Aller , in the immediate vicinity of the Volkswagen factory and Wolfsburg Castle .

history

Memorial stone to the 875th anniversary of the town

Kästorf was first mentioned in 1135 as Kestorp . The village lies in the historical landscape of the Vorsfelder Werder . The original village shape was that of a Wendish round .

From 1742 Kästorf belonged to the office of Vorsfelde . During the French era , Kästorf came to the canton of Vorsfelde in the Helmstedt district , in the Oker department of the Kingdom of Westphalia . According to a settlement register from around 1850, there were 16 farms at that time.

In the course of the establishment of the Volkswagen factory, on August 2, 1938, the municipality of Kästorf was declared a residential area with the 7th ordinance on residential areas, which, however, was initially of little practical importance due to the soon-to-start Second World War and the associated restrictions in residential construction.

As a result of the flight and expulsion of Germans from Central and Eastern Europe from 1945–1950 , the population of Kästorf increased from 262 (1939) to 535 (1950), of which 276 were displaced in 1950 . The number of inhabitants rose considerably in the following decades thanks to job opportunities in the nearby Volkswagen factory. In 1962 Kästorf received a church for the first time with the Evangelical Lutheran St. Johannes Church, and Volksbank Vorsfelde eG opened a branch in Kästorf that year. In 1966, today's fire station was built.

On July 1, 1972, the former municipality of Kästorf, which comes from the Helmstedt district , was incorporated into the city of Wolfsburg in accordance with the Wolfsburg Act . More recently, Kästorf has seen a further expansion through the “Hinter den Kohlgärten” building area.

The Kästorf coat of arms with the windmill blades designed by the heraldist Arnold Rabbow was adopted by the local council of Kästorf / Sandkamp on February 2, 1978. The colors are reminiscent of Kästorf's earlier affiliation to the Free State of Braunschweig , whose national colors were blue-yellow.

Local mayor

Together with the district of Sandkamp, Kästorf forms the village of Kästorf-Sandkamp , which is represented by a local council. The local mayor is Francescantonio Garippo ( SPD ).

The Kästorf post mill from 1861 is the only surviving windmill in Wolfsburg. Their windmill blades can also be found in the coat of arms of Kästorf. Since the 1960s, however, the windmill has belonged to the Kreuzheide district due to a re-city .

The consecration of the bells, which hang in a free-standing tower, followed on October 31, 1964. The parish belongs to the Provostei Vorsfelde of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Braunschweig .
