Wendschott is a district in the far northeast of the city of Wolfsburg . It is located in the historical landscape of the Vorsfelder Werder , a glacial ridge of . The place borders directly on the meadows of the Drömling wetland . This includes the nature reserve " Wendschotter and Vorsfelder Drömling with Kötherwiesen ".
history
The village is mentioned for the first time as Wendes Kothe in a tax register of the city of Braunschweig in 1366 . It is the German name for the Katen inhabited by members of the Slavic tribe of the Wends . Like other Werder villages, the settlement was probably planned between the 10th and 11th centuries. Even today, the arrangement of the old farmhouses shows the original village shape as a Wendish round shape . Due to the inhospitable heathland, the economic situation was meager in the Middle Ages. A description of the village from 1759 mentions the poor yield of the farmers and that buckwheat was a staple food due to the lack of bread grain . The only remedy was the drainage of nearby swamps, especially in the Drömling, and the introduction of artificial fertilizers in the 19th century. The village square at the former school building in Wendenstrasse (formerly Hauptstrasse) became the central point in the village. In 1874 the new school was built with a classroom and teacher's apartment and a small tower with a clock and bell to the left of the main entrance. The new tower was built in 1928 and the small tower was placed on top of the new tower from the left. Today the building is an administrative branch of the city of Wolfsburg.
In May 1946 Wilhelm Behrens, who had been appointed mayor in May 1945, was shot while trying to arrest a thief. Today a street in Wendschott is named after him.
On July 1, 1972, the Wendschott community was dissolved; it previously belonged to the Helmstedt district . The former municipal area became a district of Wolfsburg and got its own local council headed by a local mayor . The coat of arms, approved in 1969, was continued after the incorporation. In the 20th century, the former Rundlingsdorf developed into an elongated village structure through the development of new building areas, which has grown together with the district of Vorsfelde to the south . In 2017 the former Gasthaus Zur Recreation , a half-timbered house dating back to the 18th century, was demolished.
coat of arms
The Wendschotter coat of arms shows a ploughshare in the middle of an upwardly open circle, which stands for the original village shape as a round shape .
politics
Politically, the district is represented by the Wendschott local council. The local mayor is Siegfried Leu ( CDU ).

- Heiliggeistkirche ( Evangelical Lutheran ). Built 1971–74, modern low-rise church building based on a design by Friedrich Berndt , Braunschweig. The actual church space of the community center is formed by a sacred space in the middle. This 10 m × 10 m chancel with baptismal font, lectern and organ offers space for around 100 visitors. A community hall, group and classrooms, the sacristy, the pastor's office, the registry, the entrance room, the sanitary facilities, the kitchenette and storage rooms are grouped around this central sacred space. Several movable walls can be used to create a large room of over 250 m² from different rooms. The bell bearers for ringing two bells at the community center were inaugurated in 1980. The large bell bears the inscription “He who has ears to hear, hear” (Luke 8: 8) and the small bell: “Let the Spirit kindle you” (Romans 12:11). The Bible verse of the small bell and the ceiling painting in the church interior with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit give the church its name "Heiliggeistkirche".
