Velstove is a district in the north of Wolfsburg .

geography

Velstove lies in the historic landscape of the Vorsfelder Werder .

history

Velstove was first mentioned in a document in 1366. According to another source, it was first mentioned in 1419 in the von Saldern family's document book, in which a dispute between the von der Schulenburg and von Bartensleben men is reported. The original local shape was the Rundling , the Lower Saxony houses were arranged with their gables facing the village square.

From 1510 to 1742 at the latest, the von Bartensleben family exercised the decisive influence, and they also held the place directly as a ducal fief . From its foundation in 1742 to its dissolution in 1807 by the French occupying power, Velstove belonged to the Vorsfelde office . From 1807 to 1813 Velstove belonged to the canton of Vorsfelde in the Kingdom of Westphalia .

In 1841 the nearby Wipperteich , once the largest pond in the Duchy of Braunschweig , was abandoned and drained. Its area was sold to 12 residents from Velstove and Eischott with the condition that the pond area be converted into meadows. In 1869 the last school building was built, and a starch factory was built in 1890. In 1896, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the founding of the German Empire , a peace oak was planted in front of the school.

In 1911 the volunteer fire brigade was founded . The Gasthof Uehleke was built in 1914, it remained the only restaurant in Velstove until the Second World War and was closed in 1976. In 1922 the starch factory burned down after a lightning strike , it was not rebuilt.

In the course of the establishment of the Volkswagen factory on August 2, 1938, the municipality of Velstove was declared a residential area with the 7th ordinance on residential areas, which, however, initially had little practical importance due to the soon-to-start Second World War and the associated restrictions in residential construction.

As a result of the flight and expulsion of Germans from Central and Eastern Europe from 1945 to 1950 , the population of Velstove increased from 240 (1939) to 446 (1950), of which 174 were displaced in 1950 . The number of inhabitants rose considerably in the following decades thanks to job opportunities in the nearby Volkswagen factory. In 1952, the second restaurant, the Deutsches Eck, was opened and it lasted until 2009. In 1953, the Steinwanne was the first building area after the Second World War, and in 1956 the Am Kiesteich 2 building area followed . A sports club was founded in 1958, and in 1960 Velstove received its first church with the Martin Luther Church. The building area Am Wipperteich was built from 1961 to 1963, followed by the building areas Velstove Ost I in 1963 and Velstove Süd in 1964 . On May 4, 1967 was held at the Motocross -distance Velstove ring for the first races. In 1968 the streets were named Velstove and the fire department was given a new building.

On July 1, 1972, Velstove, which until then belonged to the Helmstedt district , was incorporated into the city of Wolfsburg in accordance with the Wolfsburg Act . In 1975 Velstove got a sports center, in 1978 its coat of arms. In 1988 Velstove experienced a further expansion through the Auf dem Kroye building area ; other building areas were Velstove Ost II in 1989 , Zum Plümer 2000–2002 , Glanzwanne in 2003 and Glanzwanne II in 2013 .

coat of arms

The Velstov coat of arms , designed by the heraldist Arnold Rabbow, was unanimously adopted on February 10, 1978 by the Brackstedt-Velstove-Warmenau local council. The colors are reminiscent of Velstove's earlier affiliation with the Free State of Braunschweig , whose national colors were blue-yellow. The sheaves were taken from the coat of arms of the Bartensleben family , who had an influence in Velstove for a long time. The sheaf also symbolizes the rural character of Velstove.
