The federal highway 588 (abbreviation: B 588 ) is only 20 kilometers long and one of the shorter federal highways in Germany and runs exclusively through Bavaria. It leads from the B 20 near Eggenfelden in Niederbayern to the A 94 near Neuötting in Upper Bavaria .
course
The federal highway 588 branches off south of the Rott in Eggenfelden from the B 20 and leads south to Reischach. Mitterskirchen, which lies in between, was relieved considerably by the construction of a bypass road (traffic opening on June 12, 2008). To the north of Neuötting, it bypasses the districts of Eisenfelden and Unterau and ends at junction 23 (Neuötting) of the A 94 in the Inn Valley .

history
The route was designated as a federal road in 1989 in order to connect the existing trunk road connections in East Upper Bavaria, which run in a north-south direction.
The federal highway 588 was the federal highway with the highest assigned number until the number 611 was assigned in East Westphalia . The part "88" is reminiscent of the B 388 , which is reached from the north end over a short distance on the B 20.
