The federal highway 340 (abbreviation: B 340 ) led from the federal highway 12 to the nearby Austrian border between Simbach am Inn and Braunau am Inn . It lay entirely in the area of the Bavarian municipality of Kirchdorf am Inn and, at around 600 meters, was the shortest of the German federal highways.
The B 340 has now been renamed a branch of the B 12 . The B 468 is now Germany's shortest federal road (not signposted as such) and the B 243a the shortest with its own signage.
At the time of the annexation of Austria to the German Empire, the road led as Reichsstraße 340 further east via Braunau am Inn, Altheim (Upper Austria) , Ried im Innkreis to Lambach , where it reached the then Reichsstraße 31 (now: Wiener Straße ). The length of this section was around 80 km. Today, the section from Braunau to Altheim ( Altheimer Strasse ) classified as state road B bears the designation B148, the section from Altheim to Ried and on to Haag am Hausruck as Rieder Strasse is designated B141.
