The federal road 66 (abbreviation: B 66 ) is 50.0 km long and leads from Barntrup to Bielefeld .

course

The B 66 branches off from the B 1 east of Barntrup and runs via Barntrup, Lemgo and Lage to Bielefeld . In Lage it crosses the B 239 . From there it continues via Helpup to Bielefeld. Between Leopoldshöhe - Asemissen and the L 787 / Ostring / Lagesche Straße in Bielefeld, it has been developed as a motorway-like motor vehicle . In this course it crosses the federal highway 2 in the form of a clover leaf. However, the continued construction was still not realized this once as Highway 35 / 36 planned realignment of the B 66 until Ostwestfalentunnel the B 61 at the Eckendorfer road, a pre-built input for this route. After today's end of the road, it is called Detmolder Strasse . From there, the Ostring branches off, which then merges into the other end of Eckendorfer Straße. The Ostring and Eckendorfer Strasse now take up almost all of the through traffic to the B 61 . On the corresponding signpost at the end of the road, through traffic is directed over the Ostring with the notice "All directions". The old route of the B 66 over Ubbedissen was rededicated to the K 15.

South of Lemgo, between the B 238 and the L 712, there is an approximately four kilometer long new road as the B 66n . The actual B 66 to Barntrup runs through the inner city of Lemgo.

The section between Bielefeld and Leopoldshöhe-Asemissen will be rebuilt as the B 66n. The groundbreaking took place in August 2017. The new road should be ready by the end of 2022. The currently estimated cost is around EUR 30 million.

Oddities

Based on the famous highway in the USA, the street is often jokingly called Route 66 . However, many residents see it as “a completely normal federal highway”. With Route Nationale 66 in France and Route Nationale 66 in Belgium , the German federal highway 66 is the subject of the bilingual book Im Namen der Route 66 - Drei Reisen in Europa / Au nom de la Route 66 - Trois voyages en Europe by Roland Siegloff and Thierry Monasses.
