Allegory of the Fructidor

The Fructidor (German also fruit month) is the twelfth month of the republican calendar of the French Revolution . It follows the Thermidor , it is followed by the Sansculottides .

The name is derived from the Latin fructus , fruit '(hence the French fructueux , fruit-bearing') and the Greek δῶρον ( dõron ), gift '. The fructidor is the third month of the summer quarter ( mois d'été ). It starts around August 18 and ends around September 16 .

Day names

Like all months of the French Revolutionary Calendar, the Fructidor had 30 days, which were divided into three decades. The days were named after agriculturally important plants, with the exception of the 5th and 10th day of each decade. The 5th day (Quintidi) was named after a pet or farm animal, the 10th day (Decadi) after an agricultural implement.

Conversion example

The 5th fructidor VI is to be determined .

The year VI is in the table above, below the Gregorian year 1798 . Under the 5th (top line of the day) is the 22nd. Since this is before the month transition (31st → 1st), August is meant.

So the Gregorian date is August 22, 1798 .
