Allegory of the Frimaire

The Frimaire (German also Reif months , frost month ) is the third month of the Republican Calendar of the French Revolution . It follows the Brumaire , it follows the Nivôse .

The name is derived from the French frimas , hoar frost '. The frimaire is the third month of the autumn quarter ( mois d'automne ) and thus the third month of the French revolutionary year. It starts around November 22nd and ends around December 21st .

Day names

Like all months of the French Revolutionary Calendar, the Frimaire had 30 days, which were divided into three decades. The days were named after agricultural crops, with the exception of the fifth and tenth days of each decade. Every fifth day (Quintidi) was named after a pet, every tenth day (Decadi) after an agricultural implement.

Contrary to the original proposal by Fabre d'Églantine , the 8th and 11th Frimaire were named "honey" and "wax". These two day names were initially intended for the Nivôse. The principle of only using plant names in the Nivôse was thereby broken by the National Assembly.

Conversion example

To be determined is the 11th Frimaire XIII .

The year XIII is in the middle table, below it the Gregorian year 1804 . Under the 11th (top line of the day) is the 2nd As this is after the month transition (30th → 1st), December is meant.

So the Gregorian date is December 2, 1804 .
