  • 1854: In the Grattan massacre , Lakota Indians kill a 30-man US Army unit who wanted to arrest an Indian cattle thief , except for one soldier who had escaped badly . A soldier had previously shot the chief while he was leaving from the palaver . Immediately a punitive action takes place against the Indian tribe.
  • 1987: The killing spree in Hungerford / England leads to the death of 16 people and leaves at least 13 injured before the perpetrator shoots himself.
  • 1992: At the " Aktion Standesamt ", 250 same-sex couples apply to the registry offices nationwide to get married in order to draw attention to the unlawful situation of same-sex couples in Germany and to initiate the discussion about " gay marriage ".
  • 1999: The violent criminal Dieter Zurwehme is caught and arrested by the police after several months on the run .

  • 1458: Cardinal Enea Silvio de 'Piccolomini, a former bon vivant and well-educated poet prince, succeeds Pope Calixt III by the conclave in the Vatican . elected and takes the name of Pius II .
  • 1846: The founding meeting of the World Evangelical Alliance begins in London. By September 1, 921 Christians from twelve nations and 52 Reformation churches are working to create an international network of national and regional alliances of Protestant Christians.

Disasters

  • 1867: A major fire destroys almost all of Johanngeorgenstadt .
  • 1917: The major fire in Thessaloniki goes out. The old town has been destroyed and over 79,000 people are made homeless.
  • 1935: Major fire at the international radio exhibition on the Berlin exhibition grounds. The restaurant of the Berlin radio tower burns out here. Since the fire only breaks out after the exhibition halls have closed, there are only three fatalities.
  • 1941: The British passenger steamer Aguila is sunk by the German submarine U 201 to the southwest of the Fastnet rock on the Irish coast . 157 passengers and crew members die.
  • 1966: An earthquake near Varto , Turkey kills around 2,500.
  • 1980: After an emergency landing in Riyadh , Saudi Arabia , the crew of Saudia Flight 163 initiated the evacuation of the burning Lockheed L-1011 too late. All 301 occupants are killed by fire gases .
