Federica Diémoz

Federica Diémoz (born April 28, 1975 - August 19, 2019 ) was an Italian-Swiss Romance philologist and dialectologist .

Life

Federica Diémoz came from the village of Roisan in the Aosta Valley . She studied linguistics, literature and folklore in Turin and did her doctorate at the University of Neuchâtel with a thesis on her mother tongue, the Franco-Provençal dialect of the Aosta Valley. In 2009 she became Professor of Linguistics at the University of Neuchâtel. As the successor to Andres Kristol , she headed the Center for Romance Dialectology ( Center de dialectologie et d'étude du français régional ) at the University of Neuchâtel and, from 2015 to 2017, interim at the Glossaire des patois de la Suisse romande dictionary institute .

Her main research areas were the history of the Romance languages as well as the dialectology and sociolinguistics of Franco-Provencal in the Alpine region. One of her linguistic projects is the Atlas linguistique audiovisuel des dialectes francoprovençaux du Valais romand .

Since 2016 she has been leading the Language Design in WhatsApp: Icono / Graphy project , which is part of the Sinergia project “What's up, Switzerland?” Together with Christa Dürscheid from the University of Zurich .

In spring 2019, Federica Diémoz was elected President of the Commission of the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences for the four national dictionaries . In her home region she was Vice-President of the Institute Center d'études francoprovençales “René Willien” .

On August 19, 2019, Federica Diémoz died of a serious illness at the age of 44.
