Ernest Schüle

Ernest Schüle (born November 5, 1912 in Herisau , † November 23, 1989 in Montana , Canton of Valais , Switzerland ) was a Swiss Romance philologist , dialectologist and ethnologist .

life and work

Schüle received his doctorate in 1938 under Jakob Jud in Zurich with La terminologie du joug dans une région du Plateau central (Zurich 1939). From 1940 to 1949 he was editor and from 1949 to 1977 (as successor to Karl Jaberg ) editor-in-chief of the Glossaire des patois de la Suisse romande , first in Zurich, from 1955 in Lausanne and from 1972 in Neuchâtel (successor: Zygmunt Marzys). When the Center de dialectologie et d'étude du français régional was founded there in 1974 at his instigation , Schüle became the first director. Schüle also co-founded the Center d'études francoprovençales René Willien in Saint-Nicolas in the Aosta Valley in 1967 and was the initiator of the Atlas des patois valdôtains in 1969 . From 1967 to 1983 he was associate professor for Romance dialectology at the University of Neuchâtel .
